DVI-D to VGA
<div class="IPBDescription">converting digital to analog...</div>Hello,
Is there any relatively cheap way to convert <b>DVI-D</b> to <b>VGA</b>?
<b>(<i>NOTE:</i> DVI-D is digital and VGA is analog, a simple cable cannot do this)</b>.
I need a way to put my laptop's display on my old TV. My laptop has an HDMI output that I can easily change to DVI-D. Once I get a VGA signal, I could use <a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815260011" target="_blank">this</a> to convert it to component.
I see a bunch of couplers on e-bay that are <a href="http://shop.ebay.com/items/__dvi-d-to-vga_W0QQ_nkwZdviQ2ddQ20toQ20vgaQQ_armZ1QQ_armiZDVDsQ20Q26Q20MoviesQQ_armmZ94QQ_ruZhttpQ3aQ2fQ2fdvdQ2eshopQ2eebayQ2ecomQ2fitemsQ2fDVDsQ2dMoviesQ5fQ5fdviQ2ddQ2dto2dvgaQ5fW0Q51Q51Q5fnkwQ5AdviQ512ddQ5120toQ5120vgaQ51Q51Q5farrQ5A1Q51Q51Q5fsacatQA11232" target="_blank">claiming to be DVI-D to VGA</a>, but I don't believe it. There's no way that conversion could be done in a coupler.
Anyone have any ideas?

See, there is your problem (mind-wise).
How do an analogue and a digital signal differ?
(Think about it for a few moments. Or even better cut open a vga and a dvi cable and behold: Copper....
It also helps, to be very specific: "I need a VGA-Male to HDMI Male adapter" etc...

You cannot turn 1s and 0s into an analog signal by patching the cables...

Yeah you're pretty wrong here, as flathead said... VGA is an analog signal, DVI-D is solely digital. you can't convert 1s and 0s just by changing the wire type.
Also... As far as I know, all wires are copper, except for the fiber optic ones. Though some have gold tips to help increase the conductivity of the plug and reduce the distortion...
Old DVI at least used to include the VGA lines so you could just slap on a quick adapter. Guess they decided to take it up a notch.....
But yeah, sorry, can't help ya there. There might be some weird way to hack it with some analog parts, but I doubt it considering the encoding differences.
Better than the 350$ one I found.
Here's one for 180.00 USD, actually:

The DVI-D side is kinda big because it's got the conversion logic in there. (I assume)

Here's the thing Thansal is talking about, I think: <a href="http://www.smartvm.com/USB-to-DVI-C6803.htm" target="_blank">http://www.smartvm.com/USB-to-DVI-C6803.htm</a>

Toms Hardware did a review of this, judging by this review I would say it's worth the extra money to get an actual converter rather than this solution... Video playback is important to me. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I also find fun stuff if I search for HDMI -> VGA (120 USD)

Composite/Component. I always bugger the 2 up. Thought his goal was Composite, which I am fairly sure that USB could do with little or no problem. If he is aiming for component, I won't swear to it.
How portable does this need to be? Will you want to do this other places?
And what is your goal to display? To play movie files? Stream video? Web browse on a big screen?
I mean for 250$ or less you could buy a cheap PC with a TV card/video card with VGA or s-video out. Or if you have an old PC or maybe a friend does, you could just get the vid card for like 50 bucks new.

I want it for movies and shows. The TV is an old CRT.
Well, I'll keep my eye on e-bay. Thanks everyone.
