Cool test Depot, first time I have tried an IAT, and even while it was going on I found myself taking longer when matching up the good words with the african american faces. I suppose I was lucky to get away with only a slight preference for european americans.

I feel somehow that its not what I should have got, but I certainly dont feel embarassed or ashamed in any way.
I think probably the biggest inputs into the result for me, are the number of people I know well (while I have plenty of non- white friends, and work with many people you would class as black or mixed race, non of my close friends are black), and the pervasive and subconcious asociations that are present in many forms of media (there was an interesting mention of something similar in 'Flat Earth News', that black people are pictured in certain UK papers in relation to negative stories as opposed to positive ones 9 out of 10 times).

    incidentally, I also tried the gender/ science test and did even 'worse' on that one <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

The IAT runs through goods with whites first, and then switches blacks to the good side, without switching the side the words are supposed to be on. By far the dominant factor for me IMO was confusing over that switch.

I'm probably somewhat predjeduced against blacks. I don't believe in the slightest they are inferior, but I see black people so rarely in real life they are hardly a familiar experience. Realistically, for most people, all it takes is people wearing different clothing to make them feel uncomfortable. I don't think you can put any weight at all in instinctual emotion or unconscious reaction. People are uncomfortable with anything unfamiliar, race is no exception, and no amount of education will fundamentally change that.

It's an instinctual response from the good ol' days when we were at a significant risk of getting eaten by predators. Anything unfamiliar was potentially dangerous.

I tried the flash test that made you sort words to faces or categories and though that it was kind of weird it didn't seem like I had the freedom to sort things as I pleased.
