NS Non-Steam LAN game problems.

Hey everyone.
I hope it isn't too late to be talking about the <b>non-steam</b> version of NS. I know that you aren't able to play non-steam NS online anymore; I'm just going to play it at a LAN.
I managed to get NS3.1 working with HL1.1.1.1, but I've encountered a few <b>minor</b>, yet annoying problems.
First of all, I don't have an escape key, and can't bind a key to escape. The only way I can quit Half-Life is to alt-tab and end the process.
The next annoying mishap I've encountered is my menu. I can't access the menu to build/mutate etc, even if I bind it to a key different to the default.
Finally; I can't seem to get the console to work. I've added the command to the target of a shortcut on my desktop, but nothing happens when I press the ~ key.
