Menu Hang Problem

So I recently regained the desire to play Natural Selection again, re-downloaded it installed it etc.
At first when I went to boot up either NS or Half-Life, the menu screen would flash for a second then it would go black (my monitor would make that clicking off noise once).
I updated my drivers (duel monitors) and tried setting my refresh rate to 60hz. This caused the menu screen to pop up and sit there, but just hang. The options in terms of joining a game starting a server etc never pop up and have to ctrl-alt-delete to exit NS
Note that I am running windows XP x64 and I have a more than capable system.
