I'd definitely have to see some in-game shots of it to really give any constructive criticism. Although, I trust Cory completely in ensuring it looks good, the changes he made were on-point and I think he's going in the perfect direction with it. Judging from the model it does look a little smooth, but I think once it's been placed in-game with transparency and mist and whatnot it'll look great.

From the video and twitters it sounds you guys have a really efficient process and the game is coming together quickly. I'm really excited, and I hope you have time to include all the things you're talking about(transparancy, glowy animations, mist animations, among others)
I noticed something about the new hive that seems off. There are little spikes hanging out the bottom that look like they were tacked. They should be more infestation buildup near the spikes to make them look more natural or just remove them altogether.

The hive is the glowie producer? Wow that sounds really cool! Those art assets you guys are doing are really top notch. Having so much living, moving, and breathing detail to something like the hive is going to make the world seem a lot more believable.

I thought something looked off about it, had forgotten that detail.
This hive is really awesome. Can't wait to see it in game but it think it needs some infestation on the tentacles. Other than that keep up the good work guys.
I like how the hive has gone through the evolution process. I'm more interested to see how it blends into the rest of the NS feel than just the renders though.
Great work! Take your time and NS2 will become great <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />
new hive looks brilliant compared to the old one, but will aliens still be able to sit on top of it?
*Looks like Marcus is doing a great job, wasn't sure at first with the siege cannon models, but seeing the hive "in-game" makes me feel better about how the mobile siege cannons will look. Cant wait to see the new chambers!
Man, you artist guys are incredible - Cory's concepts and then Markus reproducing them so accurately its incredible! From me screwing around in blender to what you guys are doing makes me feel so poopie <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Looking forward to seeing it in game.
When you get all the mist and like spore puffs and stuff going gota make a little teaser trailer to put up, will look so nice!
Really like the changes you guys are making. Unknown Worlds owns. Even though I've stopped playing videogames lately I'm sure NS will bring me back like it always does lol.

I look forward to see how the hive rooms look with all the mist and glowies flying around, and hopefully some neat animation of the hive or infestation. I hope that the hive room will feel very alive even when it's empty of alien players.
I usually lurk about here just to catch up, but I thought it about time I vocalised my appreciation for these updates.
The new hive looks SO much better and it no longer looks like a weird shrivelled up penis too.
I think a lot of people's requests and observations will become irrelevant once this hive is in context. With the dynamic lighting, the hive-generated mist, the infestation and the new aliens/chambers around it, I think we'll be too busy drooling to complain. I appreciate that some comments are relevant and that feedback is important though and I'll try to join the mob of hecklers when I find myself with criticisms.
Thanks so much to the UW guys for keeping us in the loop and valuing our comments!
This is <i>exactly</i> what I was looking for from the podcasts: insight into the development process of NS2.
More videos updates like that and you'll start to summon quite a following not to mention new people who have never heard of NS following the progress simply because it's fascination to watch the construction a new creative game title. Just given the current rate of replies to update, it's notably one of the most popular one. (well besides the colossal, world-inverting announcement about you all making your own engine adapted from source)
Just please <i><b><!--coloro:#FF00FF--><span style="color:#FF00FF"><!--/coloro-->PLEASE<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc--></b></i> promise me you are going to give your community mapping / level-designing tools that are easy to use and have a logical, streamlined functionality!
(That's one of the big ones, outside of the gameplay and creative design of the game itself of course)
~edit~
Almost forgot: THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE & KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK TEAM! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
First off, i am almost at a loss for words... the attention to detail is nothing short of amazing. I wonder if other development companies pay this much attention to individual model detail as you guys do.
I love where you guys are going with this.
What I'm really concerned about is the gameplay itself, balance dynamics and such.
I wonder if you guys are ever going to give a tour of your studios to your adoring fans.... I plan on heading up to norcal in January, maybe I could give the forum goers a "fan's eye view" of everything <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Remember, even if they don't release the tool the way you mappers want, they respond to feedback so they can just update the tool based on what you guys have to say... that's what makes this game development model unique <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Looking great so far, and each iteration shows a marked improvement. I think the iterative improvement makes it clear that your decision to off-site the modeling was sound. You have also set yourself a very nice challenge - show us the hive in a couple of weeks/months rendered with the render enhancements you have talked about!
Its a nice Podcast again, but please dont spent so much time at art and design, give us features ... we can see and get happy about nice models if we play the game. I getting tired of this, and the whole ns community too. su much servers going down <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> more and more players leaving the ns game ... so give us FEATURES!! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
