Game crashes when starting a server.

Hello there, long time fan here.
Well quite some time ago me and my friends were playing natural selection on the occasional lans we had.
it was fun and we had some great nights with it (we tend to draw the game in length)
Now that was quite some time ago. there is a new lan upcoming and we got our attention on NS again. So, because i manage the lan most of the time, i want to make sure it works properly.
I install my half life in an extra directory than my steam folder. part because i want it so the others can just copy it over their game to make it easier, but mainly because my steam says my half life key is not valid (anymore?).
after patching the game to 1.1.1.0 and installing the mod it killshl whenever i want to startup a lan server saying the usual "hl launcher has encountered an error and will shut down". i tested it with other mods (even some steam only ones) and it worked flawlessly.
Yes, yes yes.. i hear you cry "no-steam is not supported" . But I will still ask, is there any way to get this to work?
I would like it to be for a standalone hl copy.. but with just an error message, i cant even try to fix it myself.
Anyone know a way? Maybe even getting an old version from somewere that was still ok without steam?

What you are asking is illegal, and thus why it isn't supported.
There are still some old installers floating around that you can use on an old version of HL, however the newest versions of NS REQUIRE steam, as they require a valid, patched, copy of HL.
Or you can convince people to spend all of $10 and buy a legit copy of HL and have no problems.
