Chucking your flashlight.

<div class="IPBDescription">As if be so selfish. Share!</div>Haven't put a whole lot of thought into this as of yet, but as the title suggests, i wonder what this could bring to the game.

Picture yourself, completely dark room. Group of marines. Everyones got their flashlights on, but the room still isn't completely lit up. One marine from the back, clicks the immense illumination button (1 use. Bye bye flashlight till respawn) on the underside of his flashlight. Five beeps till activation so theres time to throw it, and the light. I say five seconds/beeps, because i wanna add some epic role playing. i.e. If it were instant, everyones eyes would die from the light.

The thrown flashlight would turn into a flare like thing. Lasting for about 20 seconds, it would be about 3x as bright as a flashlight, and act like a lamp on the floor, casting shadows around the room, but yes; lighting up everything in its direct line of sight. Everything else would get shadowed. This would be orsum, because imagine the shadows. Aliens could still hide, yes, but not in the center of the room.

Another element of this:
It could be like a flashbang, only it remains for 5 seconds at about 50% of the initial light pulse strength after the initiate light pulse. I.e. The flash uses up all the power.

Epic downside:
No flashlight.
Aliens get pew pew'd

Upside:
Marines running round with no flashlights.
Marines could flash themselves! :O (refer to "Another element of this"

I mean, we are advanced marines in the future. As if we don't have flares, or some ability to light up a room bar flash light.

What do you rekon. If they were to put nightvision into ns2, all this could be tech upgrades. TECH 1. Flashlights as flares w/ secondary skill of flashbang. TECH 2. Nightvision.

I absolutely hate being flashed by my teammates in games that have flashbangs though.

    i gave an uber suggestion about flares/floodlights being able to be picked up and used in certain ways, here's a summary;

Flares are a lamp you can hold in one hand and a pistol in the other, lighting the room up, the flare will never go out till you right Click, which throws it, then it's 30 second timer starts. But you don't have to ever hold it, when you have it unlit in hand, you can left click which is light and throw, or you can right click which is light, and if you hold the RMB for a sec, you keep it in your hand, if you don't you light and drop it where you are.

Floodlights illuminate in a 90 degree horizontal and 150 degree vertical fasion, It can be placed with left click, and you can repick it up with the +use key. It never runs out of energy or goes off unless shot by a stray friendly bullet or a alien kills it, a simple 1 skulk bite kills it, 1 of any type bullet kills it.

You can simply either add them to a locker that comes with the map, or you can make them cost like 10 res for FL, 5 for flare at armory.

Its all about balance in terms of the cost of the item. Implementation is what you start with... Balance we can work out. (I am thinking hehehe scary aliens hiding in the dark)Whether it be a flashlight, glowstick, flare, glow-in-the-dark teddy bear, dont matter...

I say we have found it... <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" /> The new NS2 will be dark and a lot easier to experiment with lighting and other elements. This would make certain maps make use of a support character(the kind I like!) to effectively use a lighting element.

Mappers would have a major balance issue on hand with that in play as well.
