Steam ID can be gotten by typing status into the console when in game. It gives a list of all current players and their IDs.
Basically it is how Valve keeps track of us (if you cheat on a VAC server, your steam ID is what is banned).
However, unless you are a constellation member (donated $$ to UWE), then it doesn't matter, so don't fret it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
The steamID is the primary key of the account-table in in valves database <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
Or in other words: It is a way to keep track of players without having to give out their login-names to everyone, thus enshuring higher account security.
I miss my old 5 digit steam id account <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
