Alright, the idea is that as buildings are damaged, the damage becomes visible. Maybe 2/3/4 steps of damage. I.e. 100% - 75% - 50% - 25% or 100% - 50%. This would allow marines/aliens to keep better track of the health of their structures, while also just making things look aesthetically nicer. Of course, this would apply to both marines and aliens, whereas alien structures in reflecting their respective health, would bleed/look a little gorey. On the flip side, welding/regen/healthspray when used, would repair, and the models would change again.
Just a suggestion. Would look pretty sweet i rekon <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

It's far from pure aesthetic. Aliens target low HP buildings, marines weld them. It takes away a bit of supervising from the commander if not anything else. Of course in the original NS supervising is part of the commanding, but I think they have been trying to get rid of it in NS2.
