Unplayable fps only under some circumstances

<div class="IPBDescription">i.e looking at phasegates and flashlights.</div>G'day everyone I've recently started playing NS again and this error has cropped up which i have no idea how to fix.

I can get a perfectly constant and playable FPS but then as soon as someone turns on their flashlight or i look at a phase gate my fps will drop to an unplayable amount until i look away again. Things like medpacks and ammo packs also cause this as well as certain points in some maps.

If anyone could point me in the right direction to solving this it'd be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance =)

phase gate and meds is from the particle system....

I think there is a command to limit the number of particle but I am not at home so I can't futz about finding it.

Honestly, What are you system specs?

sounds like your card has issues drawing tons of 2d sprites, try to update your drivers and direct x and see if that helps any. Also what kind of hardware setup are you using? Video and system memory may also be a issue or your card could be old.
