<div class="IPBDescription">with teasers ;)</div>So, there used to be a webcomic thread some time back, but unfortunately it did not contain any teasers on what to expect and its also prolly outdated by now.

Lets make up some rules, cause they are always fun:

1: One comic per post.
2: Post must contain teaser comic and link to the comics webpage.
3: Teasers should stand out on their own.
4: Please mark comics that might contain adult content accordingly
5: Feel free to post the big ones (vgc, penny-arcade, ctrlaltdel, licd, lfg etc) but also show some love for newer ones.

Hmm... I've got 4 I'm willing to submit for perusal, which to choose...

<a href="http://harkavagrant.com/" target="_blank">Kate Beatons "Hark, A Vagrant"</a> is probably the overall best one, I even bought her book when it was first released.

This is +EV, it's a comic based around online poker players and the things they do. If you get this joke, then the comic's probably for you.

<a href="http://www.lucid-tv.com/008.html" target="_blank">Lucid TV</a> is tied with Dr. McNinja for "funniest comic about doctors." The humor is about as black as you can possibly get, and the suave retro art style is fun to look at, at least once you get a little bit into the archives (the art isn't so hot for a while). In fact, the entire comic improves as you get later in to it. I had real trouble choosing just one to show everyone.

This is <a href="http://www.viruscomix.com/page324.html" target="_blank">Subnormality</a>, or also known as the wall-of-text comic. It's incredibly sarcastic and full of social and political commentary. Occasionally, there's some educational stuff, but be prepared to read a lot. This one is kind of texty, but the artwork is always top notch though. Just a warning: there is some strong language in some comics.

<a href="http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20021104" target="_blank">Girl Genius</a>. Fun art, fun characters, fun story. Steam Punk adventures.

Personally I can't stand 'random' humour, so PBF, dinosaur comics, etc etc are all of no interest to me. I prefer to have a running plot, but even that isn't necessary. Just the entire "olo I R random and make no sense, therefore am funny" is not interesting to me. so some one else post some other types of comics.

It's worth noting that, first chapter aside, all of Girl Genius is in colour. And I find <a href="http://www.girlgeniusonline.com/comic.php?date=20081110" target="_blank">this page</a> to be more representative. "Huh. Now it looks like they're doing some kind of musical number."

Yes, but it was more of a "dump all your ######" thread than a handpicking of the ones we really like and think other people might also enjoy rather than just people with the same taste.

<a href="http://www.darthsanddroids.net/" target="_blank">Darths and Droids</a> is a screencap webcomic of the Star Wars prequel trilogy, written as if it's an RPG group playing it. It's inspired by a screencap comic that <a href="http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?cat=14" target="_blank">did the same thing for Lord of the Rings</a> (but I didn't like it), only in the LOTR one, the GM forced the players to follow the story of LOTR; in Darths and Droids, the GM has his own storyline, but the players repeatedly go off on wild tangents rather than follow his plan, which leads to the prequel film stories.

The prequel films make far, far more sense if you imagine that the characters are a bunch of crazy RPG players.

I found this Baldur's gate 2 comic after searching for various BG2 tribute on the internet to satisfy my BG2 itch after finishing the game.

You can find the whole comic (so far) here: <a href="http://baldursgatecomic.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html" target="_blank">http://baldursgatecomic.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html</a>

It's cronicles the story of the main char and all the chars you meet in the game with some fiction, very recommendable but you chew trough it very fast <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Drowtales.

One of the prettiest and well done comics out there. Has a bit of an anime fetish at times, and the between chapter parts can be either funny or annoying depending on your taste, but overall an amazingly rich world with excellent artwork. Be careful, the clan names are a little hard to remember.

LFG is wonderfully amusing, though that comic isn't particularly telling ,and involves plot no one would get and in jokes. (which is why I think the 'post a random page' doesn't work so well, atleast for comics that I like, as the point of random humor comics is that each page is 100% standalone)

YE GODS drow tales has changed!

I seriously need to try and read through the backlog again. I never manage to actually get through the entire thing (it is friken huge)

LFG has much in common with CAD: Both try terribly hard to be funny, but fall flat. And both have bad cases of the drama.

Speaking of webcomic drama, OOTS has apparently forgotten that it is supposed to be funny.

I dunno. I think seeing V get its androgynous ass kicked was pretty funny. >_>
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
yah, honestly? Anything with Xykon in it is rather amusing to me.

However, "having a plot that isn't a punch line every single comic" isn't the same as "drama"

CAD's "OLO BABBIE! OLO MISCARRIAGE!" is silly drama. And the guy that does it is a twit. But I still read CAD, and I still find periodic strips amusing (however he is the perfect example of "random isn't funny")

    hmmm

no one has said SP yet, so here:

    <a href="http://www.somethingpositive.net/sp12192001.shtml" target="_blank"><img src="http://www.somethingpositive.net/sp12192001.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" /></a>

More proof that a comedy comic can have plot/drama and not suck.

To me, it feels like he's trying to portray V's "fall" as dramatic and serious and sad, what with it selling its soul (well, renting) and being hated by its family and leaving them behind and being all traumatised by not being a good enough wizard and stuff. It doesn't come across as tragic; it comes across as annoying and forced.

Ever since xylon attacked that city which I can't remember the name of and can't be bothered checking (the one he's in now) the storyline has gone from light and funny to dark and "serious", with occassional comic relief. It might have worked if the comic had always been like it. As it is, it just feels forced and inconsistent, like the author had a mid-comic crisis and decided he wasn't being meaningful enough and had to kick up the drama.

    /rant
  • lolfighterlolfighter Snark, Dire Join Date: 2003-04-20 Member: 15693Members
I dunno about annoying and forced. I find V to be acting completely in-character given what we know about it so far. And I find the smackdown delicious and satisfying. This may just be my general elf antipathy though.
  • X_StickmanX_Stickman Not good enough for a custom title. Join Date: 2003-04-15 Member: 15533Members, Constellation
Sure it's in character, it's just not in keeping with the theme of the comic. Belkar leaving them to go and mercilessly slaughter a town of innocents just for a laugh would be in character, but it would screw with the comic's theme. That's what I feel has happened.

F@NBOY$ is my favorite gaming comic after Penny Arcade, although the best strips usually aren't about gaming. The art's pretty awesome and the sense of humor is not only funny but different; it's not a lot of sarcastic stuff, or very dark humor, or ultraviolent jokes or sitcom humor or anything like that. It has some hilarious jokes, basically, that you really don't see in webcomics. Clicking on the comic will take you to ~200 comics in, where the art starts to get good and the writing is better, but if you start from the beginning there's some good stuff (as long as you want to read through some not so good stuff).
