widescreen resolution cropped?

I got myself a new widescreen monitor in which I've been using the native resolution 1920x1080. I did some conparison screenshots with my old 17" non-widescreen monitor and found out that widescreen resolutions in fact crop the top and bottom of the screen.

Is there a way to fix this so that I have the same field of view when using a widescreen resolution?
