No.
All hives and Marine Starts should have an internal res node so that even while defending they have baseline res income.
The game is being designed for 16v16 whereas NS1 played smooth at 6v6 and became unruly (but not terrible) at anything above 12v12. What I always wanted to see is 4 locations for hive placements but only a possibility of 3 max at any given time. Possibly even a secondary marine base expansion? NS always had the RTS/FPS mix going but was more FPS than RTS. Just an idea.

That won't work.
Look at older versions of Ns_hera. The res tower for the hive at data core use to be out in the hall way. It was annoying trying to defend to RT and the hive separately.
The current version now has the res tower in the hive room. I assume that this change was made because separation didn't work.

No it's smart actually... if the area adapts to the number of players in the server.
The game Warhawk, ps3, had the ability to host a map and section off how much of the overall map you wanted to play... to the point where it could just be player vs player instead of the use of air vehicles, jeeps, tanks etc.

Both the marine and alien teams have up to 16 players each and spawn in their own base at the beginning of the game. ... NS2 layouts will typically have 6-10 rooms (bases plus smaller rooms for some resource points) and are simpler than the sprawling, nondescript corridors found in Natural Selection 1 maps.
I didn't have a chance to play NS1 much. But I always thought it should be more about stealth and maneuvering. Alien lieforms like skulk and lerk aren't much good at straight frontal assault. I want to use vents, please. More importantly, there are countless team FPS games with focused battles.
