The Alpha

Welcome to "The Alpha" thread.

And my name is,,,, unimportant, but you can call me "Tekoppen".

There's an upcoming Alpha for those who have purchased the "Special Edition", witch I have no doubt that you already know.

The goal of this thread is not to discuss how much you want to play the Alpha.
It's all about finding answers to many of our unanswered questions about the Alpha.

This can't be an easy task since there is no way we can know for sure if we don't have evidence.

Evidence.
If you know something for sure i recommend that you post where you've got the fact from.

Feel free to add more questions if you got some.

This is how it's going to work:

Tekoppen: #1 Q: What color are the Onos in Natural Selection 2 comparing to in Natural Selection?

Someone: #1 A: The Natural Selection 2 Onos is mostly purple and the Natural Selection Onos is red and orange, watch the link
http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/wiki/imag...Onoscompare.png

I will now begin the thread's purpose.

The Questions:

#1 Q: Since there isn't any facts when the Alpha will be released, is there a way we can find out when it won't be released? Maybe by useing the exclusion method?

#2 Q: What will the purpose of the Alpha be?

#3 Q: Will the Alpha be able to play online?

#4 Q: Will the belly slide be implemented in the Alpha?

#5 Q: Where will we report the bugs that we find in the Alpha?

#6 Q: Will the Beta take over just after the Alpha get released?

#7 Q: Is it worth to buy by the "Special Edition" just to be able to play the Alpha?

I don't see any particularly crucial questions here besides, "When?" which is what we're all thinking anyway. Devs included.

Then add some questions of your own?
If you can't see any questions.

I can't even say that these is my questions, I posted what I remember I've seen.
    Besides the #1.

I really don't see the point of this thread, sorry.
  • ctdctd Join Date: 2009-06-01 Member: 67611Members
Nobody knows the 100% answer to any of those questions. I hate waiting for this game as much as anyone else but just have to be patient.

The devs may not even know the answer to some of those. If you can get some answers out of the devs then kudos to you :)

I also don't see a point to this thread.

It's done when it's done. Every forum poster, or anyone who is waiting for NS2 should know this by now. The Devs aren't going to just be straight up with everything. They're busy developing!

I'm not expecting you to know "100%"

What I'm expecting is that someone would share there thoughts, else then complain about the no point thread.

It might be no point. All I'm asking that we would gather the information we have here as a information thread about the Alpha.

But since there is no point in this thread, i should just shut it down.

#1 Q: Since there isn't any facts when the Alpha will be released, is there a way we can find out when it won't be released? Maybe by useing the exclusion method?
    #1 A: Not tomorrow.

#2 Q: What will the purpose of the Alpha be?
#2 A: By definition this is actually a Beta test, its purpose is to find bugs, demo the software on a large range of hardware, promote the game, etc.

#3 Q: Will the Alpha be able to play online?
    #3 A: Yes

#4 Q: Will the belly slide be implemented in the Alpha?
#4 A: In the first version, no.

#5 Q: Where will we report the bugs that we find in the Alpha?
#5 A: On a forum or some other internet based bug reporting system.

#6 Q: Will the Beta take over just after the Alpha get released?
#6 A: There will be a period of delay.

I made that up but those were not very interesting questions.

I'm gonna go ahead and add that those of you waiting for the tools will most likely be waiting at least until the alpha is released. And mostly likely I would expect them to be released together. It seems that this game is scurrying along fast enough to sorta negate the need for something like the original NSTR (Natural Selection Technical Release).

    #1 A:

I seem not to find where the source of my information is, so I can't link you anything.

I remember a while ago in some thread that someone said that the Alpha might be release just after the reveal of the Fade.

#8 Q: How many think that the Alpha might be released just after the reveal of the Fade?

This just seems like a random spam thread to me, but I'll let it go for now. We have no answers about the alpha so all we can know is "When it's done".

Darn was going to type "When it's done".

Hence that there is like no info about the alpha really then rumors/speculations, like its out when they show have done the "Fade" showcase.

The purpose of an Alpha is usually stress testing an engine, or hardware compatibility checking. It's essentially like an in-house testing but given to a larger group of people. In fact most alphas are kept in house by testers who get recruited to do the testing. I think it's kinda cool that the Alpha will be so large. It's typically more select than a beta, where information on people's computers used to test the game is recorded. Betas tend to be more broad scale, and less controlled. The games are usually just one step from finished in a beta test as well. Alpha testing is less refined, you have a working engine and most of the "core components" in place, but not necessarily all the fluff and art work. Alphas aren't really used for balance testing either.

Hope that's helpful. And I'm soooo anticipating this just like every other alpha thread to get locked.

    7. Special edition will also contain tools for mappers (NS2TR) so that those of us who are interested in map (and possibly other content) creation can get a jump start on building, testing, and balancing additional maps for when the game is completed

Won't you need the alpha to test your maps if they work or not?

I think they will work, as for playtesting... that's another matter. :)

If they release the simple map render tool that I've seen mentioned (loading maps in a simplistic view without loading the full game) then I don't think we'll need the full game straight up, as it renders all you would see in-game normally. Most likely minus some key elements IE: physics.
