I'll go lurk IRC sometime. Or bug spellman23 on Steam.
I'm around 1600-1650 skill level. However, I'm more than happy to help out newer players as long as hosts don't kick my arse out. Ratings are useless anyways, so I won't mind losing.
For newer players, HoN has posted a basic tutorial vid on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=1139851609771.
I like it a lot, and I never really played dota. Been playing on my friends brothers account when it isn't in use :( My favourites so far have to be MageBane and Pyromancer. Legionnaire and Slither are also really cool. Lots of noobs playing the game still though (eg dont carry tp etc).

Been in the LoL beta for a couple weeks.
Still playing it. Didn't have this feeling after DoTA. Also, I can tell what's going on in it at a glance, whereas in HoN, that isn't the case by a longshot. The fancy graphics sure are nice, but they get in the way of gameplay way too often.
LoL feels incredibly polished now. Lovin' it. Just wish I could try more than one map atm. Matchmaking doesn't allow any of the others yet(bugzzzzzzz).
It's funny; everything outside of actual gameplay feels very beta/alpha-ish. But once the game is loaded up? Smooth as butter. Really nice.

Well, assuming you don't turn on all the glitzy stuff, you should be OK. Biggest issue is network speed/latency.
Basically, if you can play Source Games at a decent framerate/settings, you should be OK. Granted, HoN is much shinier (and more intensive) and LoL's cell-shading, but I digress.
