<div class="IPBDescription">Reserved names</div>Hello,
I did not see a previous post on the subject so I am ging to post a simple question for the developers. Can we please reserve names? If it meant preordering the game fine... but I would love to reserve my name! Yes? No?
This isn't just a "suggestion," but more of a question for the developers I suppose...

No one could name himself "l33t p0wzn0r of uberness" just because some ###### has preorded, took the name and came never online since.
It's not like your standing on a very important List of Persons, right?
Too much effort for a small feature.
correct me if I am wrong.
Server specific plugins have some uses. The ENSL plugin for example recognizes everyone registered to the league site. Game wide recognizition system isn't going to happen that way though.

So is your issue with people being able to give themself a name, or with preordering, because all I would like to see is a name slot for myself. NS1 had it, but it didn't stay in the forums, or other places. Many games use the same idea. You login to the site and into your account and player with the same name. Its really nice for tracking things if you ever want to, or keeping in touch with other folks you play with. I am only asking if we can have an ID follow us wherever we go. So in the forums, in game, or wherever.
Also... if someone DID take the name "l33t p0wzn0r of uberness," but paid for the game, I don't see why you would have a problem with them. It's not like there are 500 Johns and Sally Sues out there mad that some other John or Sally Sue took their name. I think its a fair statement to say most PC gamers tend to use random but various names consisting of ideas or a personality trait (such as Sniper007==>, or CODphillyCOD).
Too much effort? I didn't realize it would take months of work to be able to give people names... Games have been doing that since Doom and Quake.
The problems I run across (mostly) is having to create another password, and another login, and another password, and another login, and another password... just to hit the website... or to get online.... Yes, I know I am retarded, but that's why I said the question is more_for_the_developers, since it's not really a simply feature request, but MIGHT be a little more involved, like our Steam IDs are. Unless you are a developer, in which case I'm really retarded. hehe
Age of Conan does it, and it's really nice to have that same login work in the game, on websites, and for contests. Only one to remember is great. And yes, I do think if I support the game by paying for it, maybe I can get a stupid feature like a name for myself. Everyone could!
Sorry, I was drinking when I posted that... Yeah, I just meant for ease of use mostly. But I do also think it would be cool that if I knew I had "the name XXXXX5G," then I could maybe have a Steam user page using my ID also in NS2. Kinda cool to be able to stick to one name and have it tied to your friends list and such, like HL2 and Left 4 dead does. I use corpsman for all my games!
Any particular reason?
Just wondering how the team could administrate such a massive Communityfeature
I don't think I've ever played any online game that requires you to stick to one name. MMOs are a different story, but even in those you can technically make different characters and thus they have different names. It just makes no sense to me to regulate this sort of thing so much. If I want to be John one day and Billy the next whats the problem.
And you're asking for any reason that its unnecessary, but I think you sort of have to give reasons for it to BE necessary first. Thus, if its not necessary, it is by default, deemed unnecessary.

We already have our steam-ids. I never thought Steam-IDs made it hard to keep track of your friends, etc. Stats can also be attached to that (dystopia does it, and obviously TF2 has a slew of stats).

If no one seems to care that other people have "their name" then why bother with a reservation system in the first place so people can reserve "their name." To me that sort of promotes getting upset over that sort of thing.

We already have names in games...yes...I agree? So what are you asking for?

like I said, whats wrong with the current steam system, assuming everything goes through on steam as planned?
If anything, I just see this idea as taking more freedom away from players who are used to having that freedom allotted to them, so...it just doesn't seem necessary. A lot of people also come to the internet due to the anonymity. Thats a bit of an attractive part of the internet. Theres plenty of games out there that aren't burning in flames due to people being able to change their names.
