Like it or lump it?
I recently reformated my computer because it was a dirty little girl that needed some reconditioning and working drivers.
On a whim I installed Windows 7 and to my surprise I love it! It's as if they actually made an operating system I would enjoy using AND that doesn't have a new problem every week like XP!
While there are some things I'm getting used to still about it, and there are some kinks to work out (like why does my mouse freeze for an 1/8th of a second after boot up guys? Get on that!) But by and large it feels like it uses system resources way better then XP which is.. counter-intuitive.
It might just be that I'm using the 64but Win7 instead of 32bit XP but everything feels smoother, takes less time to load and even games load a bit faster without any crashing or weird conflicts with modern and even old games!
Not to sound like a ######, but 'everything just works' with it =\
I like, about the same as Ubuntu (for different reasons) but more then XP by far, maybe even 2x as much.

It's not just your imagination, nor is it the transition from 32 to 64. Benchmarks show that Win 7 actually is a little faster than XP, miles faster than Vista, and they also made nice interface changes which just help it to FEEL faster.
I just need to find a way to get a non RC copy on the cheap (and also one of the higher-end ones, not the home premium)
Unfortunately they kept the cumbersome network manager :(
Why do you get a new problem every week? My runtime of XP is usually over 1.5 years before I go and reinstall or use a backup...
Anyways, I might also have a look-see at this W7. Heck I might like it :P
Where is it? It's not the home version?

That's the home version, isn't it?
edit: oh, i see the option for pro. Is it out yet? It says pre-order, not buy.

yes, you get an email with your serial and a link to download it.

Lock up is probably being caused by a driver conflict or you got a more than one antivirus installed.
I held out on Vista becuase of poor reviews, and let's face it, XP did everything I wanted it to do!
I might jump onto Win7 when I re-build the comp. However, I tend to side on the advice that you should wait a month for all the major bugs in a new OS to get shaken out.
I got Windows 7 64 from my university's bookstore for $6.95, anyways. If you're in Uni, check them first.
I haven't Installed it yet, and I'm not sure I will until I get a new comp. Only have 2 gb of ram and my XP is still goin strong. I'm not super keen on reinstalling and reregistering all my licensed apps. Also it hasn't been out for long, so some unforseen problems are possible. When core i7 prices go down tho.... mmm winderz 7....

I also only have 2gig of ram but it absolutely does not feel like a problem, in fact I've so far not noticed any kind of situation that says to me "Yep, there's my ram being a problem again." Maybe it's just the extra speed the 64bit processing is giving me, but it's smoooooth.
I have found one flaw though, Company of Heroes is stuttering and crashing like a sonofa######, I can't see it being anything other then Win7 so I'm going to do some investigative snooping to figure out if I can fix it, maybe compatability mode? Hmm.

Were you running in DX10 mode before? If you're running in DX10 now and you weren't before, that's probably it. DX10 kills performance.
According to a forum thread somewhere the recent ATI Drivers caused the game to stutter like a maniac when you set any graphics options to 'Ultra', after setting everything to 'high' the problem resolved. Guess I'll just wait till they release some new drivers to fix that.
Been using it for about six months and never had any woes.
"Ultra" is DX10.
If only you know as much about Star Wars as you did about API bundles and their performance.
For a second I thought that was Stickman that said that. I'll have to forward that quote to him.
Troublemaker u r...
Snazzy though. I'll keep it for the time being just to see how Shattered Horizon plays out. Multiplayer Dead Space sounds awesome.
It runs anything man... I'm serious.
I'm a big fan of XP but 7 tops it easy. I'm running it on my 4 year old laptop right now (###### on-board vga) duo 1.8ghz and 1gb of ram... works like a charm, no stutters/lag at all.
If you're a student, you should check with your school if you're part of the MSDNAA. I had the pro version for free. (in French and English, and 32bit and 64 bit :d )
I would like to point out that my friend with an nVidia card just updated to Windows 7 and had the exact same problem which he was able to fix by setting everything to High.
So...
Hah.
Apparently it archives the old OS files and installs its own, so no wipe required.
I'm still gonna archive my stuff, wipe, and re-install though. Just to be safe.

Upgrading any version of windows is always fraught with danger. Only a madman would attempt it.
I usually just copy the entire contents of my old hard drive into a folder on my new one and do a fresh install.
I'm going to see if I can somehow wrangle an upgrade or exchange for this unopened copy of vista ultimate I have here. The perfectionist in me wants to get Win7 ultimate, but I'm not sure if it's worth it.
