AT1:BT beta released!

If giant killbots don't get you excited I'm taking your man card.
In what is pretty much the first 'new' mech game to be released (sorta) in like a billion years or something, MekTek has just recently released the Assault Tech 1: Battletech open beta. Basically AT1:BT is a massive remake or upgrade or something of Mechwarrior 2. Their goals are to make the 'best' mech game they can, as close to the simulation and tabletop as possible. At least that's what I think. Whatever.
From what I can tell so far the game just has an Instant Action mode, pitting you and your Star against an enemy setup.

Oh hell yes.
The game is downloaded through 'MTX', which is their p2p client that will also be used for the overdue Mechwarrior 4-for-free release that was announced like five months ago.
Horray for Mechwarrior!

Have mine, I'm too manly for it anyway
Game looks cool, will try it asap.
Or you could just do the 'internet thing' and google it and pretend you know. Sarna.net is a great start.
Downloading.

I think Monk and Stickman would be perfect candidates.
I am amused by this.
He comes in, makes a random spam posts, sticks around to fill in some actual info, and then gets on with picking on stick.
That being said:
I'm at work, and youtube loads for hell here. Were the shots from the cockpit early in that video the actual HUD?
If so:
Ye gods they should have spent less time on making the models looks awesome (which they do) and more on making the UI not blow dead bears.
Navigating the menus is infuriatingly slow. That stupid slide-in menu nonsense is entirely without merit. The keybinding interface is terrible, as is the interpretation of keypresses. I bound Z to zoom and shift-Z to zoom out. The result? Pressing Z zoomed in, pressing shift-Z resulted in a fight between zooming in and zooming out, since even with shift depressed it interpreted the Z keypress as zoom.
Considering keyboard/joystick configuration hell was always a big part of MW2, I guess I could consider this a fitting tribute, if not exactly a value-add.
The actual combat is pretty awesome, loosing a blazing trail of LRM20s is as fun as it always was. I just wish the interface wasn't so awful.
Also, this game has GOT to have head-tracking. Get some Freetrack API lovin' underway.
Final verdict: Promising, exceedingly so, but nigh-unplayable in its current state.
