Backpack

What do you guys think of a backpack upgrade? It would basically be a backpack that the marine wears. It would allow for additional ammo, grenades and mines. It could also be used to carry medpacks so the marine doesn't always have to ask the commander to drop them.

It would be pretty easy to implement. The marine would obviously lose his/her pack upon death. Maybe the pack could remain on the ground for a while and another marine could pick up and scavenge w/e supplies it had.

i had a similar idea however only other marines could use the stuff in the pack. that way a new player could still offer something to a squad by being a pack mule. the amount of stores in the pack should determine the speed penalty on the player carrying the pack

Seems like it would slow gameplay down for the Marines.

I say, just allow the Armory to be built anywhere there is power (like how it is in NS1), than being forced to build near the Command Chair's Building Sphere of Influence.

Maybe if the maps were huge, like if NS2 was a FPSMMO(RTS) kind of like how Planetside(without the RTS element) is, then I can actually see a use for this.

Possible idea for NS3 if the next step is a MMO direction for the NS2 DEV Team, sure(and probably a good idea), but not for NS2.

Especially if one of the three Marine Commanders will be in charge of dropping Medpacks and Ammopacks, there would be no use for the backpack.

However, I do think it would be a good idea if Marines could store 1-3 Medpacks in their invetory, for use later. Ammopacks you do not need to store (self explanatory if you think about it).

TL;DR: Really, read it. Seems to be a lack of reading skills of a few certain posters who take things out of context by only reading the end posts of a discussion.

I say by default the Marines should be allowed to carry more, than having to unlock a Tech Upgrade high up in the Tech Tree.

    1) MG
    - 50/150 Bullets
    - 1/5 GL Rounds
    - 50/100 Flamethrower Fuel

    2) Shotgun
    - 8/32 Shells
    - 8/16 Flechette Rounds (Only if they are a seperate ammunition type, and not a dual purpose rounds with two firing modes.)

    3) Heavy EXO Minigun
    - 200/600 or 250/750 or 300/900 Bullets
(Or 1000 rounds with no reload. Or maybe when they Heavy EXO "locks down", you do not have to reload... because of the belt feed mechanism.)
    - Dear lord no gimmick "Overheat" feature, it is just blah.

    4) Mine*
    - 1/6 Mines (Buy them in packs of 2 from the Armory, or pick them up from dead players.)

    5) Frag Grenade**
    - 1/3 Frags (Hopefully they will model them after actual Frag Grenades and not HE Grenades so they are actually useful. Search my name for the I&S Thread on it.)

    6) Welder
    - 1/1 Welders (I hope this makes sense to everyone, I will FACEPALM if you think you need more than 1 Welder per a Marine.)

    7) Medpack**
    - 1/3 Medpacks (Either they were bought from the Armory, or, you picked them up while at 100% Health Points.)

    * Bought 2 at a time from the Armory.
** Bought 1 at a time from the Armory.

I hope that clears everything up for all the people with ??? when thinking about inventory balance. Obviously I am speculating and making things up, but I think it is a pretty good setup for the start of the Alpha/Beta of NS2. If something needs to be +/- from the amount of carryable in the inventory, at least the inventory balance will start at a happy medium that will clearly tell if a paticular item need more or less of it in the inventory.

I don't know about all that crazy jazz you guys are suggesting, but I find the simple idea of letting each marine carry one or two med packs that he can use on himself or teammates (obviously as an upgrade a la tampons) to be pretty intuitive :D
