scenarios

mixing it up on the same map
The UW team has indicated that they will likely release NS2 with only a few official maps -- which is fine. However, the ability to place items/structures/etc. may make it possible to create multiple different scenarios available to a single map. When a round is about to start, the game engine would pick from the available scenarios (either randomly or via UI). Each scenario could make very small to very large changes to how the map plays.

Of course, it will take time to implement a map's scenarios -- but not nearly as much time as designing an entirely new map. The great thing about scenarios is that a map doesn't have to implement them. If no scenarios are found, then the map will just load as normal. This allows for rapid development initially, with scenarios added over time to increase the value of the map.

P.S. Preferably, NS2 would have built-in scenario support. However, if this is not the case (due to time constraints, etc), then the mapper would probably have to implement the scenarios directly. I would very much like to see a way to add scenarios using some official method without having to modify the map file itself. This would allow both the UW team and 3rd party developers to mod existing maps without having to rework a map. Perhaps they would still use the mapping tool, but somehow be able to associate those changes to a scenario file instead. This may require reworking some of how the mapping tool works, which takes time. That said, it would definitely be nice to see.
