Laser tripmines were stupid worthless in NS1 except to build ladders, need to find a way to make them more useful. I wouldn't be opposed to a proximity/motion triggered mine of some sort. Having the laser visible just makes them too easy to evade / destroy.
A spatial limitation on the quantity of mines should be imposed as well, of course, so we don't have a giant pile of explosives that's insta-gibbing an Onos.
Or in a pinch. Don't make generalized claims. There are good spots to kill with mines where even professional players trip on them. Don't forget the carpet tactic, too. I've seen whole hallways locked down by mines.

Done!
Damage self = Maybe, as long as you can tell which ones are your own.
Alternately, just have tripmines only trigger against aliens, and then that explosion hurts anybody, so you could kamikaze to take out some marines...
