Hi, couldn't really see this info being specifically stated anywhere. Is steam required for NS2?

Nope.

NS2 will use Steamworks for some of its features, but it won't require Steam itself to be installed or running. Modern Warfare 2 does the same thing, I think.

You're welcome.

Don't take my word for granted, of course: I'm not an insider or anything.

Yes it will require Steam. We use Steamworks, which requires that you run the Steam application.

And the retail version will be sold on Steam? I assume the game will get some big attention through steam advertising (news popup, free weekend et cetera)

No. Well, not no, but not yes either. There is no 100% confirmation that NS will be sold through Steam. It is likely to happen but we need to be closer to release before Valve will confirm it. Regardless, it will require steam to be running to control many of the features we use from it.

I dont think thats right, last I read ns2 is for sure going to be sold on steam but the unknown right now is if the pre-orders can input their cd keys later and have their non-steam versions become a steam version.

I can assure you that is not the case right now, sorry. I even double checked with Charlie on the fact. Once we know for sure that it will be sold on Steam, we will let you guys know.

It saves the team a lot of effort having to write all the functionality (server browsing, etc) on their own. Hopefully it won't be too much of an issue for you :)

I'm fine with it being on steam. Means I can invite friends into a server through steam instead of having to tell them the IP Address.

What's wrong with steam, I know it had a rough start and was quite annoying in the beginning. But at the moment it is very stable and indeed has all the functionality a game needs, without the team needing to put all the effort in...

But still, what is wrong with steam atm...

Steam's awesome. Probably the most effective and least annoying anti piracy I've seen. Additionally I like how it keeps all your games together and updated.

I am at the point where I am put off games that don't come on steam. Done a 180 since playing NS over the WON servers :)

I always buy my games off steam - I'm becoming too dependant on it :D
Glad that it will use the steam works service, should make the server finding easier.

oh crap, so this pretty much rules out a linux and mac version of NS2....
You should make an official announcement for that, allot of people (like me) preordered NS2 for that reason, it would be unfair to withold that information from them.

At the risk of being wrong twice over, I do believe a Mac version is planned. Somehow.

well, steamworks is windows only, so i don't see how a mac or a linux version can be made

I can't find the source, but I think they said they would have to develop their own tools to handle the functionality of steamworks for that kind of port.

which i would argue is not very likely to happen, given the size of the developement team.... but having a official feedback would really be nice, at least to know if the linux port is still a plan, and if yes if it would be coming out the same time as the windows version, a few months later, or even a few years later..

They're doing their best to release the product as widespread as possible, but truthfully, the mac user base is tiny. And generally if you enjoy mac products, you have a windows dual boot already, so you should have no problem working NS.

If you don't have a windows boot, you're blowing my mind. Linux on the otherhand is sub 1% of all gaming, please understand that the time and effort to put into creating a full anti-cheat, server browsing system, etc, isn't really a priority. Also, like mac, dual boot windows, I know you love Linux, but windows is perfectly viable to have as a dual boot to play a game.

You setting up a dual boot takes far far far less time then Charlie and co. creating entirely new features. You have to look at it that way. :)

You forget that for sure more than 1% of the preorders come from people that preordered because it was stated that NS2 will have linux and mac support.
You also forget that NS2 is a small game, i will need every publicity it can get. Havinf a native linux client will give you a HUGE pr boost.
For example lugaru, the predecessor to Overgrowth, has 50% of it's sales on linux + mac. See here: http://kotaku.com/5128318/a-case-for-indie...n-mac-and-linux

So i think you can't ignore that potential for a indie game
