So im trying to make it so i can make a grate texture that will cover a square hole i made so i can put a light under it and make it have shadow effects. But every time i try it gets all messed up pulling walls around. Its like i cant even make a simple square without my walls dissapearing or going crazy.

Which method do you use to make walls? You could try to cut and paste the walls, placing them in the exact same spot as they where, but in the process unbinding them from eachother. When you move one of the walls, or resize it, the other walls will not move around and go crazy :)

edit: come to think of it, I've been having trouble with cut/paste since the last patch. Where only the edges and not the face itself gets copied (if you select a face and hit ctrl+x & ctrl+v. Ctrl+c & ctrl+v works like normal). Not sure if this problem only affects me though.

select the face you want to make the grate on (from the floor mesh i suppose) and copy it (ctrl+C) then delete the face and paste it back in place (ctrl+V) that is the only way to detach a face from a mesh.

now you can move this face down a little so the grate isn't at the exact floor level (i assumed you wanted that, and now your walls doesn't move and everything)

if you want shadows from the grate you'll have to copy/paste again the face and flip it (selection mode and ctrl+F) and apply same mapping to it so it cast shadows.
