They didn't expect much from the preorders. Of course afterwards they said "oh sh--" and decided to use the new money to release a better game. Note the female marine model that is in some of the older videos. That was a model created for NS2, but it doesn't have nearly the same quality as the current marine model. I bet they threw out quite a bit of their early art after the preorders changed their plan. So basically they made a rookie mistake when they underestimated demand originally.
