Please explain "trolling" to me...

A lot of people here think I am some kind of "troll" and/or participate in "trolling." I do not understand why. A real troll is some sort of mythical beast that is dwarf-like and mean. I do not fit that physical description. If you disagree with an oposing viewpoint, and use character assasination in order to attack the person rather than the argument, then you are not being very ethical.
