[FanArt] A lerk and a marine in a mine shaft ...

I made a fan art for Natural Selection 2, first only for a training purpose as I wanted to improve my painting skills, but I eventually achieved to do something which should not make your eyes bleed - at least I hope so
So it is a Marine with a Jetpack, fighting with a Lerk ; they are both flying in a place which looks like a mine shaft and the outcome is uncertain.
<img src="http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2010/034/6/f/Duel_au_sommet_by_rmkz.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
I tried to make the marine looks like the "official" NS2 marine but please notice that it was not my priority ; for the alien I could not find any official concept from NS2 so I made my own Lerk, inspired by the existing Kharaa concepts <a href="http://ns2.squarespace.com/kharaa/" target="_blank">here </a>.
I can easily understand if you find this Lerk ugly ou weird (or even awesome !), it was the first time I tried to draw anything non human.
I hope you like it !
PS: I did not know where to post it, there is not a lot of forums for NS2, and I felt that this topic would suit the General Forum
PS2: sorry for my bad english

Holy crap.
It's obviously not super-duper professional, but this is very high quality. Great job!
has anyone heard if jetpacks will be in NS2 though ? :)
The ankle is a little bit distorted, I did not really noticed it when I was drawing, but now you say it it's quite obvious! Well maybe I will change it when I have time.
The name Vasquez comes from the movie Aliens (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eycDq4NW88o" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eycDq4NW88o</a>)
That is some pretty awesome skills at work, I wish I could color like that (I'm stuck coloring cartoon style :P)
So now we have map work in progress threads, editor related questions/tutorials and NS2 fan art.

Greetings,

some more in depth questions
- what did you draw it in?
- you using an intuos or something similar?
- how long did you work on this?
- what was the original working resolution, and any chance of hosting that one as well?

For the bony skull, you are right it looks odd, but in fact if you take a look at the already existing concept art from UW for the Onos there is also this "bony" thing. I think it tries to give an armor feel to aliens in order to explain how they can sustain Marines shots without dieing.
I used Photoshop CS4 and <a href="http://www.techdigest.tv/wacom_bamboo-thumb.jpg" target="_blank">a Bamboo Wacom tablet </a>. I spent approximately 20 hours on this, the hardest part was maybe the background, a little bit tedious and I am not used to draw such things ^^
The original file is not much bigger. Bigger is always better but I discovered that uncontrolled ambition often leads to unfinished works :-), so I used a A6 format (1240 * 1748). You can find it <a href="http://uppix.net/7/9/4/43e4de75d26efa6cb780c40e0295c.jpg" target="_blank">here</a>
Here are some steps of the drawing : <img src="http://uppix.net/d/5/2/b11fad7697bc62cb405571fd69cd6.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Thanks again for your comments !
Now as for the bony structure, I agree it looks a bit odd. I think the lerk's face really has more of a 'quad-beak' sort of look (though the sides are probably spikes). Here's a blow-up of the hallway battle shot, with the only official shot of a lork on the clorf...

I actually meant it biologically, all real flying creatures have very light skulls without much bone structure (they encapsulate but hardly protect).

nice photoshop drawing, have you tried painter? it's very good for painting (photoshop is more for photo retouching). There's even an open source version of the gimp that has painter-like interface, the good thing about those two apps is that packaged/free brushes are of higher quality than the standard photoshop brushes

Higher resolutions are often used because the smallest brushsize means much more detailed drawing, while being no more work (you only use the detailing if needed, as you downsize it anyway), it just makes it much easier to work on details, while not forcing you to work out all those details in the big strokes
but then again, looking at that screenshot monopolowa posted, that lerk would realistically not fly either probably (wing area way too small for something that big)
then marines would jump higher :P
Maybe their armor weight is balancing this out :P
