initial reaction
Does anyone else think that the command station in the new video looks a little weird? It looks like a jack in the box or something.
Why would the military design a station where all the walls fold down flat against the ground. And the animation for it enclosing around the marine makes it look extremely fragile and flimsy.
I liked the old design and I feel like the new one is too drastic a departure.
I feel similarly about the new sentry turret. The animation of it deploying makes it look very frail and flimsy - like it could be crushed or tipped over too easily.
Then again, this is just my opinion from initial impression.
On a side note, I think the sentry turret could use a laser targeting system. This way, not only does it explain how the turret knows where its shooting, but it also helps marines see the location of the enemy intruder via where the laser is pointing.
Leave the trolling aside please.

Oh yeah, I remember that they aren't in NS1 ...

I just feel that if you look at the other structures, they have a distinctly sturdy and cubic look.
For example, the resource tower is essentially a block with 4 sturdy legs on each side. The new turret factory also has a rectangular shape with 4 deployment pads on each corner if you look. Same goes for the new command station's design.
I just feel like after the sentry turret deploys, it looks like all its components are too exposed and thin, particularly the lower part. I think that it would work well if it was designed similar in concept to the resource tower. Same leg placement and general shape, but obviously with a very different texture and detail.
I know that it's just my opinion, but I was just wondering what others thought.
New abbreviation(s):
COMS - Command Station
CMS - (Shorter Version)
No more describing the Commander as if he was sitting inside breast implants(CC). LOL.
The command station was basically a box that folds on top of a person. It definitely looks strange.

Yeah, the turret looks great. Such heavy looking static firepower always scares me a bit, but the model itself looks badass. Worrying about the gameplay can come later when we actually have one.
The CC looks a bit weird indeed. Why not just install a door to the side of the box instead of making the whole crazy folding mechanic? The giant origami doesn't feel very sturdy either.
I agree that the CC looks strange though
It seems that it was designed with too much priority on the whole folding around the marine thing.
I think the size is fine considering that it is a main target and as many aliens as possible have to be able to hit it at once.
I like how it looks unfolded and its animation, but model and especially texture look more like some boring flight simulator box then some fancy, future command center/console.
It seems to lack some litte lights or glowing parts and btw the armory seemed a little too dark and unspectacular aswell in the video.
Shouldn't the marine buildings stand out to show their importance to new players?
Anyway, maybe it's just the state of the current game and they plan to improve those things.
standing in a dark box commanding your troops for hours doesn't make much sense if you can simply grab a folding chair and sit down.
I like the turret, doesn't look flimsy to me..

and if you think that sentry gun looks flimsy, you should take a look at real life ones..like the ones samsung has built for the south korean border wall to north korea.. theoreticly they need just like 5 operators to guard the whole border but they have split it into sections.. and someone has to maintain and reload those buggers

Aliens can see lasers because they've evolved to fight the marines better.
Or at least you can say that, practically any lack of realism can be explained by alien evolution, marine inefficiency, or the general principle of being set in space and in the future and the fact that it's very obviously a game and no amount of realism will convince anyone that they aren't sitting in front of their monitor shooting people.
I'm not sure about the scale but I would say the sentry turret looks a little bit inefficient, like there's lots of dead space in the design, it looks like it has a big floorplan but only because it's spread out all over.
The NS1 sentries looked unstable but you could at least put them anywhere. If it's supposed to be used less freqently then it could do with being a big bulkier, more armored and with more reinforcing struts.
and. thats just why you do not use lasers or other active sensing devices, like i said a laser would not make any sense anyways, it cannot be used to sense movement or track a target. you will most propably use a camera or passive ir motion detectors which wont emit any radiation at all. the sentry gun had always its distinctive noises you could hear to know they are nearby. no need for something giving Away its line of fire aswell.
and yes, ns1 sentry guns look unstable, but ive always thought their tripod get bolted down to the metal floor when deployed, otherwise their recoil would make them tip over
oh, but i think a portable laser upgrade or item for a gun could be used to paint a target to priorise it for the sentry guns to be attacked first, the guns would just follow the laser dot, if it is in their line of sight :p
