How to play old ns demos!?

<div class="IPBDescription">tell me pls</div>ok so I have bunch of old ns demos and no matter what I try, i can't seem to figure out how to play them. Perhaps you pro-stars could figure it out for me.

these were taken in either 3.2 or 3.1, can't remember, it was years ago. Please amazing ns community, rez them for me!

I would guess the same way you watch any HL1-based replay.

Drop the .dem files in your ns folder (Steam/Steamapps/<username>/half-life/ns/). Then fire up Natural Selection.

Once in-game (just at the title menu is fine), open up the console (use the ~ key) then type the following:

viewdemo <file name>
spec_autodirector 0

After the hl version was updated, you have had to change some lines in the demo files with hex editor. I just couldnt find the article that fana made of it in ninelegends.com, I just recall that you had to open the demo file with some hex editor and change lines 2F into 30. There was 2 of them.

It's not so long ago, maybe year or little more. When playing older than that demos it says something like "the server has older protocol 47". They changed something, but I have no idea what, dunno really if it was a version update of some sort.

Get HLAE and use the Demotools to convert the demo to new protocol version.

Then download the <a href="http://www.ninelegends.com/files/index.php?dir=Games/Natural%20Selection/" target="_blank">specific version</a> and play it from console. You can use NS wiki's NS release dates and the demo's modification dates to figure out which version. Demofreak's demo tool can help you there aswell.

Nowadays you can just use HLAE demotools to do it automatically, as jiriki says.
