It'll be great to play about with the LUA API and see some engine rendered content on your own PC. I think 'engine test' is probably half of what was in the original NSTR.
Ive never seen so many people get exited for a TEST, Its a test people u better realize it before u get ur hopes up. I cant belive how fast they dug up the dates they preorderd and s**t. U will probibly only see one screen that dosnt even move, what is so exiting about that? I know this is easier said than done and that includs me too, I know how hard the wait is but we gotta chill and maybe go play some NS1 instead of opening a topic about a test that everybody thinks is playable, wich we dont know at this point. I bet people will start comparing preorder dates once those mails gets sent out, and some of ya will get angry at the devs for not getting one and start talking s***.

The devs have openly said that scripting support will be added to the engine test, which will allow people like me to start prototyping things right away (granted things could change dramatically making it a big waste of time, but I'd be gaining familiarity).
I feel like the devs are betting a lot of their content on the community, so they feel obligated to let us in early and grow as the engine does.
I understand your skepticism though, but I feel it's mostly reserved for people in your situation who don't seem to have much to offer. Others who have great hopes to test/make things are in a good position no matter what.

So you came to a thread about the engine test beginning, of which everyone is excited and proceed to piss and moan about people getting hyped up over something they're passionate about? Someone needs to get a life...
UWE required a boost in funding AFAIK, so they decided it would be a good idea to start pre-orders so they can get an influx of money to continue work on the game. I guess they figured that many fans of NS1 would likely pre-order immediately, and they were right.

"We are now testing our engine with a small number of players"
"We don't want to be overwhelmed with bug reports so we're starting out small. Then we'll be growing it continuously as we hammer out issues and are ready to deploy it to a larger group. We'll be granting access to players in the order that they pre-ordered"
So at this point it is still the small group and then there will be a wave for pre-orderers.

I'm assuming it's the exact same deal with the editor. The playtesters(Skulk icons) had their hands on the editor before the rest of the public did. They're probably also fiddling around with the Engine Testing.

That's what i was thinking. Not one leak. Not one screenshot. Not one stray post. Terrorist groups can learn a lot from how this cell of game testers operate (you know they probably were friends with the devs since NS1... got free super-alpha clearance that puts them somewhere above the special-edition [i.e. general public] orders) lol.
