<div class="IPBDescription">R18 games now a possibility for Australia</div>In a shock move following yesterdays election in South Australia, Michael Atkinson has quit the front bench and the position of Attorney General despite being re-elected in his seat of Croydon.

For those unaware, Atkinson was the man primarily responsible for Australia having no R18 rating for computer games. With him out of the way, real progress can be made on this front.

    But if we take the USA for example, sex is the bane of society and game violence take a backseat. They're just doing it the other way around, cause they are on the other side of the planet see :P

    The difference is that sex on television exists. There is no R18 rating, so R18 games don't exist. Only unrated games exist, and since unrated games are games that were too hardcore violent for even the highest possible rating, civilized society must be protected from them.

    Fortunately he is up for re-election in November. With any luck, the filter won't be in place by then and we can get rid of him too. Though given that he's a deputy leader of the government in the Senate, we'd have to be extremely lucky.

    Iirc they can have sex AND violence in movies, and they have both an R18+ and an X18+ for movies. However for games it stops at 15+. The argument (again, iirc) is that there is a difference between watching something and 'doing' it (so it's ok to watch a guido running over ######s, but if you were to virtually do it, it will screw you up good).

    If that is a valid argument or not is still up for debate, as both sides have published reasonable papers showing that it does/does not. You can guess my stance though.
