Darkness

Here's something I've thought of...

I believe it's intended to have lights flicker when a resource tower or whatever gets hit. And with the power grid controlling lights and stuff, I would assume that most of the map would be covered in darkness.

Now, I'm not saying that everything will be pitch black. Mappers will obviously make some lights that aren't connected to the power grid so they stay on all the time.

So yeah, will areas of the map be engulfed in darkness (besides those few light sources) when there is no tech point captured?

perhaps emergency lighting? We have no idea yet.

I don't know how the offical maps will be but I don't think I would let an entire room or hallway to be pitch black. At the very least I will put a small trail of service lights or lights that are always on as backups in tech rooms. Players need slight guide to where they can go even if they do have a flashlight.

If I remember the devs correctly, all the lights will be up when marines control the territory, dim when outside of powergrid, and when aliens take over it'll be outright darkness.

However, all three levels will be purely atmospheric, and will retain full visibility.

I can imagine it being much harder to see a hiding or cloaked skulk in a darkened room.

This will likely be configurable based on variables configured with power grid settings. Many areas will probably have two lighting schemes that can be flipped between "full power" and "emergency power" states.

it would be cool if pitch black rooms/hallways were part of the game. I played through a bit of AvP and found the use of darkness to be very immersive. it added to the paranoia and claustrophobia. I don't want it to seem like I'm comparing AvP to NS2 but they do share some similarities and certain ideas could be borrowed to make the games more engaging.

aside from being harder to see in the darkness do aliens have any other advantages when the lights are out? i.e. do they have a form of night vision?

Is this sarcasm? How can you retain full visibility in outright darkness?
