    Not a single one.

It is just, normaly, when you use steam(steamcloud), to get the files of your game/engine/beta, you download it on steam.

That is the strange point, but nevermind, I will see when it comes out how everything works. Thank you for informations.

It just uses SteamWorks. Using Steamworks does not mean your game has to be downloadable through Steam. There's a number of mods for HL2 that use it, but you cannot download them through Steam.

Could we please know why the engine test currently requires Steam? Account and content restriction gladly doesn't seem to be the reason, since everything appears to be working correctly without an active internet connection (sans online functionality, of course).
Would any attempts to remove/bypass this dependency be officially approved?

Good job so far on the semi-public test release :)

tbh, steam's opposers are usually only people who want to be able to play their games without paying for them, haven't seen an actual person oppose it for anything else. Steam doesn't change your system, you can play most games without an active internet connection, you get to download all your ###### instead of having to wait ages for installing (dunno bout other countries, but since 20mbit internet is pretty much minimum here in the Netherlands this is far, far faster than going to a store and installing it from dvd), steam cloud savegames and settings, and advertisement can be disabled (why they even offer that option is beyond me)

I have yet to find any type of drm that is better than steam imho (except none of course). the only disadvantage it has is that in europe the games are usually more expensive than in the stores, but that is usually no problem as most games on steam go on sale every few weeks (which means they're much cheaper than any store version).

if steam is adware, windows, office, pretty much any software that has a website with links to the other ###### they sell is adware... it's called targeted advertising, and I for one prefer advertising of ###### I might actually be interested in, over ###### I'm no way in hell interested in (which is what usually happens on 99% of the websites)
