Frozen Synapse

<div class="IPBDescription">Turn-based tactical combat (ish)</div><a href="http://www.frozensynapse.com/" target="_blank">http://www.frozensynapse.com/</a>

Essentially you control a small squad of dudes. You queue up their commands while your opponent is doing the same. The game unpauses for about two seconds of action then pauses again to let you allocate new commands. You can also enter theoretical commands to your opponents pieces and see how the turn would end if your assumptions are correct.

There's also some malarky about bidding fakebux that you'll keep control of sections of the map and, if you're right, you get a boost to your score at the end. It can upload matches straight to youtube, too.

Here is video:

Would anyone be interested in playing this with me?

The gameplay and features look interesting, the graphics not so much.

I'm interested. though, I need to see the video again with sound, and see something about the other game they've made before I decide what version to get.

And contrary to Zaggy, I like the artstyle - it reminds me of Uplink. And also somewhat of Subversion ('The Next Game' from Introversion). Which also needs <a href="http://www.introversion.co.uk/subversion/" target="_blank">pimpage</a>. I love that kind of electronic Tron look.

I'm not sure what you have in mind, but I'll probably buy access by myself, and give the key to a friend of mine. (Just saying this in case you were thinking of splitting the game/beta-key cost with someone from the forum).

I saw a video of this a while ago, and it looked quite cool. If it is not too expensive I'll have at it with you Scythe.

I'm interested. Probably going to wait some comments/reviews first though.

I love those simultaneous-turn-based games, I just hope this has enough of depth to be interesting for longer than a few dozen games. Any idea if the release is going to have any kind of matchmaking?

If only I had time to play more games.... *sigh*

It looks very cool, kind of reminds me of Toribash which I love, and I was all about buying it until I realized you cannot buy less than 2 copies. $26 USD for 2 copies of a game that might be trash is a little much.

Looks a bit like the Close Combat series*, but simplified and much shorter games (and it's turn-based WEGO as opposed to setup phase then realtime). I think I'm gonna pick it up on payday based on what I've seen.

    * If you like the look of this I'd highly recommend trying to find an old copy since Cross of Iron (the CC3 remake) is priced crazy high for what is essentially a port. But playing the campaign from end to end vs. a friend could be one of the best multiplayer experiences you'll ever have, so it's possibly £25 well spent.

Just bought it and my initial verdict is: hold off for a while.

I'm not sure if it's the firewalls at work but after getting admin permissions to install (standard practise where I work) it just idled for 20 mins trying to connect to the master server and didn't even have a timeout or error message. This happened twice when I tried within 2 hours.

Now, this might be because it needs further admin permissions to go online (happens with all first installation of Steam games at work) and isn't requesting them in the correct way, but until I can get online to play this against human players I can't really recommend it. I'll try it at home and on another day at work to see if I have better luck.

So really the "hold of for a while" is only a verdict for the small number of people who are going to have the same problem as you, which may be limited to people who work at the same company as you.

Bought it a few days ago. Only had a chance to play through the tutorial so far. But seems fun.

Yup. I can play it from home. You choose what game mode you want to play and you get automatched with someone within a matter of seconds (don't think it's doing it by any kind of skill ranking system, but tbh I only care about getting a game asap). Games take about 5-15 minutes. When you win you get points for the outcome, so I'm guessing there either is or is planned some sort of leaderboard, but I couldn't see it on a very quick browse this morning before work.

Yeah it really does look somewhat like the close combat series. Speaking of which, anyone up for playing close combat? CC Invasion Normandy perhaps.

How's the gameplay? Skill based? How much luck is involved? Is there enough room to try to become decent (like Toribash, for example) or is it just very simple positioning of units and clicking for their shots? Is there any strategy/tactics aside from the obvious "have shotgun dudes in front" type stuff?

I'm sure I read something on RPS along the lines of "There's no luck, weapons always do damage, and it's almost always fatal". I think the only luck element would come from guessing what your opponent is about to do.

Different classes perform better in different roles. I'm not entirely convinced that there's enough scope there for it not to boil down to whoever gets the first kill going on to win in a high skill contest, nor that the classes are sufficiently pro/con balanced for there to be that many different 'desirable' team class configurations. There's definitely enough scope for you to become decent but I'm not sure how much two equally-skilled players could outplay eachother using the same starting blocks (it seems it would be down to mistakes more than down to play style). But that's just my initial impressions after not a great many games.

P.S. Still getting the same no-timout 'connecting to Grand Server' message at work. Seems like it's not been setup to give up and give an error message when it hits a stumbling block. I was mostly looking forward to playing this at lunchtimes with co-workers, so this is a bit annoying.

    "WELLHUNG"

Code for 20% off for the next 20 hours or so. I went for it.

    --Scythe--

P.S. You enter the code at the final stage of the paypal checkout. I think you can also pay with a CC, through paypal.

My second game. It's not quite 100% polished, but it's satisfying when your plans go off without a hitch. Definitely got potential.

I gave my free code to Zaggy, we played a couple games:

Keep an eye out for Zaggy's Sam Fischer, who snuck the entire length of the map, perfectly evading my machinegunner and sniper, and shot my rocket dude in the side of the head. Cold.
