In attempt the give the commander the feeling and ability to lead teams to victory, i think a constructible item should be able to be dropped via the commander and built via the marines/aliens.
what it would do is give the commander the ability to see all the enemies in that specific area, a specific radius. So the commander would see what type of alien/marine, equipment/upgrades, items, etc.
that way you can set them up in specific areas for strategical advantages. Of course, the could also be destructible and limited in number.
