NS2 - Do you have to have Steam

I don't have Steam right now and was wondering before I bought NS2 if I had to have Steam to play because under the System Requirements it says Steam

yeah but it also says that you might not need it so it cancels itself out which is why i came here

They where umming and arring about it before but thats now over. Steam is 100% a Certified Requirment! :)
