I happen to know a guy that worked on it. He says you should play it if you haven't yet.

That seems rather biased...
Who is this 'guy'?
how do we know we should value his opinion?
Also, as I never mentioned it, your parts of the commentary were awesome.
The STUPID one.

A.K.A. The guy who got to talk about all the technical stuff.
Lots of stuff about rendering, and creating virtual areas around portals to handle physics.
If you install it now (i.e. get it into a Steam account) it will remain free.
At least, that's how I interpret the wording.

If you get it right now, you own the game, you can use it on your steam account as long as you want.

Do people still believe Macs support only one mouse button?
I've been meaning to play portal forever and a day, I've just never got around to it

Haha, ya, it's a trivial solution, but doesn't make the opportunity to take a shot at macs any less satisfying.

It wasn't really supposed to be the kind of puzzle game that most of the players will get stuck in. It's a story based puzzle game.
In all fairness, the game didn't belabour that joke, the fanboys did. There's a lot of clever, dark humour in the game, and the internet latched on to one of the least clever bits and thought that repeating it over and over again was funny.
Edit: Oh, and <a href="http://www.wired.com/underwire/2010/05/alt-text-valve-apple/" target="_blank">Lore Sjöberg</a> has a few words to say on the topic.
Portal doesn't go for ridiculous brain-twisting stuff; download custom maps if you want that. Portal goes for innovative gameplay with a fantastic story at a level that is accessible to everyone (and I mean everyone). I have personally watched people who have literally never played a PC game before sit down and have a blast playing Portal (although admittedly they were pretty bad at it :p ). A game like Half-Life 2 could never work like that; there would be frustration, confusion, whatever, and most likely the new player would just give up.
Like I said, if you want challenge, download the fan maps. Portal is more about a unique experience when taken in its totality.
