<div class="IPBDescription">I am pretty #$%^ excited.</div>So Ladies, gentlemen, any one else reading this.

World cup starts in a little over two weeks. Let's take this time to pick teams discuss players and pretend the us national team is not losing 3-2 to the Czechs on my TV right now.

Currently planning to support the States and Cameroon.Really looking forward to groups d, e and g.

I suppose the obvious solution would be to propose some sort of contest. bracket, pick a winner, or fantasy league.
Anyone else want to wave their national flags?

I'm Irish. I'm supporting 31 teams in the world cup.

To all those who made it to the finals, on behalf of Ireland, please ###### up france.

spellman23: It turns out that neither of those teams is likely to win but the states has a better chance this year than I can remember. last night they played their second line team as a sort of final cut to make it to their world cup team and they honestly looked pretty good.

The French team doesn't deserve to be at the World Cup. Not only for the reason <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QNHlFDbxvY" target="_blank">stated above</a> but the coach is lousy.

I thought they were hamsters, then hawks. Imagine my horror when they were harpies.

    That said the US <a href="http://www.ussoccer.com/Tournaments/FIFA-World-Cup/2010-FIFA-World-Cup/Training-Camp-Roster/100526-Roster.aspx" target="_blank">final team</a> was just announced. I didn't realize Hahnemann weighed 100kg.

I am looking forward to seeing someone in the Italian shirt so i can witness the glory of a morbidly obese American in a soccer shirt with abs on the front.

Going for Australia and Italy. If I Australia make it to the second round ill consider that a victory.

    Their group:

    Germany
    Guiana
    Serbia
    Australia

As the Germans have a habit of starting slowly in World Cups, I'm hoping Australia can pull off a draw against them. If after that they can beat Guiana, we would make it through in all likeliness... MUCH easier said than done though lol. If they DID get 2nd spot in the group they will most likely play against England in the round 2 game, now THAT would be great to watch.

Italy's group is easy, but you never know with them (2002 anyone?). I don't think they have a very good shot at winning this time around.

I predict one of the following will win: England, Spain, Brazil, Argentina.

PS. I have to get up between 3 and 4.30 am to watch most games *sadface*

Our dedication to getting drunk at matches/in pubs watching the matches and throwing the empties at the fans of the other team is legendary.

Our actuall skill at the game is significantly less so.

What's a World Cup? Is it like football's Super Bowl or baseball's World Series?
  • A_Boojum_SnarkA_Boojum_Snark Join Date: 2003-09-07 Member: 20628Members
Yes, except it's more like the olympics because it happens every four years instead of annually, and it's world-wide instead of one country. Which is actually why I don't get soccer/football being in the summer olympics, it's pretty redundant.

Which is why we're 3rd favourites among a lot of bookmakers? Okay I'll admit team play has lacked in previous years but it's come a lot better, we were thesecond strongest team to qualify for the World Cup, in Europe and Worldwide.

It's a shame people don't have as much pride for England as puzl undoubtedly has for Ireland.

Pride for what? Some guys ability to kick a ball around and get paid an absolute fortune for it? Doesn't interest me.

England could be the single best football team in the entire universe or the absolute worst and I wouldn't have any more pride for them than I do at the moment.
