it is a good read indeed. they don't take the brave step and say how we don't only do this for brands. we do it for all the big choices in our life, such as religion. If you were raised a Christian, you might hate people of other religions or always try to convert people, because if you can convince someone else you're the right religion, you help convince yourself. Crusades and jihads are just wars of fanboyism. Racism is the same way. Racists band together in their hatred for another race, to help convince themselves and each other that they are correct in hating that race. Same with political affiliation, and the list goes on.

Use the technique of not giving a ###### when you purchase things. Your time is worth more than the difference between leading products most of the time.

Most interesting thing in this article is the bit about how people who have an issue with the emotional center are unable to make decisions because there are too many options to weigh and without making some irrational decisions a full decision can't be made.

Actually, feelings are not all that irrationall. It is just another kind of logic based on experience and interaction with a world of many wills (social skills).

I read some time ago (this morning I think, gnight btw) but I guess I can comment now while im posting anyway. Interesting post, I recognised myself in many of the examples, and I think it explains some "mysterious" parts of myself pretty well.

What I wish that article had aswell though, would be tricks to avoid this kind of stuff, as what would make us much more flexible, and help against the whole "the world was better when I was young" mentality.

I completely avoid this sort of mentality and maintain an objective view on practically everything. My secret? complete apathy. I wouldn't really recommend it =p if you don't have a strong opinion about things, people generally think you're boring, even if the people with the strongest opinions are usually the most irrational.

I use apathy on big corporations, it makes them tolerable when I just remember they want $$$ for shareholders and nothing else

Yeah. Apathy in general stinks. Solves one problem, but screws over so many other things.

Typically I've learned to hold semi-reasonable opinions (i.e. not insane), find people with opposite ideas, talk a bunch, perhaps modify my own view a bit. Usually works out well if you're willing to have strong opinions, but civil when discussing them and open to being wrong.
