Might want to check out the giant list of quality FPS titles that have achievements. My most recently played being Killing Floor which has a great implementation of achievements.
Is this the part where you people talk about how superior you are for playing Natural Selection over Counter-Strike and how you deserve a pure untainted game for being such educated and enlightened gamers?
Gimme a break.
If you don't like them, don't participate. Find some like-minded players and get your own server. I can't believe you are actually arguing for the removal of purely optional achievements that some like to have.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I don't care what other games do. I know many games have achievements now. Hence my "all the rage" comment. If I want an "all the rage" game that has all the stuff the masses ask for I just buy the latest incarnation of whatever game released by EA.
This is Natural Selection 2. Aliens versus space marines. I need achievements for that as much as the characters of "Aliens" needed them. Which is not at all! It kills the immersion. It introduces an unnecessary meta game. I want to play Natural Selection, not Unlock the Achievement.
That alone wouldn't be all that bad. I will just turn them off the first time I load up the game and they won't bother me, right? Wrong. People will inevitably try to get them. This is a multiplayer game. This will affect everyone, whether they like achievements or not.
Achievements degrade game play. If something is worth doing it will be rewarded by positively affecting the outcome of a round. Awarding achievements for this is not necessary. The reward is winning the round. The actual outcome is a much better judge of each action than arbitrary achievement requirements. And if you hand out achievements for things that don't help you win the round people will end up doing silly things instead of trying to win the round. Instead of playing Natural Selection.
All this can be fun in the right kind of game. Such as TF2. It doesn't belong in NS2. If you need achievements take a pencil and a stash of paper and write down whatever you achieve. Take a picture of them and post them on your facebook if you need the e-fame.

Once again achievements can be useful in teaching advanced tactics, making people try things they wouldn't have even thought of trying. Roosting, for instance, is something that could probably use an achievement, as it might not be obvious to players that they can fly up to the ceiling and hang there. Putting hydras on walls or ceilings might also be a good achievement. Map specific achievements are good ones as they can teach advanced tactics on a map.
They can also be useful in helping to teach people the right behaviors.. yes, correct behaviors will be rewarded by success, but if you don't know what those behaviors are in the first place, how do you know to do them? Achievements can give direction toward that. Hence why my selection of achievements involved working with your squad and getting to waypoints quickly. Sure, it seems pretty instinctual to long-time NS players, but ideally NS2 will be catering to new players as much or more.
<b>Is this the part where you people talk about how superior you are for playing Natural Selection over Counter-Strike and how you deserve a pure untainted game for being such educated and enlightened gamers?</b>
Just elitists being elitists.
I love the inevitable references to Counter-Strike and those dirty, dirty "EA games". I'm afraid of playing this game because of people like this, once I start having fun they will probably yell at me in voice chat for not performing optimally.
Here's a newsflash: You are playing a videogame. You aren't ACTUALLY fighting aliens in outer space. Lighten up.
Meh, I don't think it's fair to call someone elitist because they think achievements distract people from playing the game for the team and winning rounds or whatever the objective is. There is a reason why commander chair doesn't have a pinball installed in it.
As far as I recall, TF2 had some issues after the achievements. Classes got massed ridiculously and ect. And that's TF2, it's probably one of the most forgiving games when it comes to team effort. Even it had trouble. NS2 has RTS elements, there are most likely moments when you need every piece of team to push the advantage and there are moments when you need to finish the game instead of being distracted by some achievement grinding.
I'm not sure myself, I don't care awfully much as long as the achievements are done properly instead of just rewarding every game prolonging element and as long as they are not required to play the game to the maximum. Still, I've got a lot of understanding for anyone who doesn't want them in the game. I'd also like to think NS2 is capable of providing depth in an accessible form, so that the achievements are not a necessity for an enjoyable experience.
Game guidance achievements are fine of course, I don't think anyone is protesting their existence.
Ok, I give up. Way to many achievement fa...rmers on this game.
With fans like these - a notepad on the backside of a marine stabbed with a pen kill a developer (or someone who killed a developer) without taking any damage from him
viking berzerker - marine with viking helmet hunt a gorge for x meters with your switchaxe out.
vicky berzerked - marine with switchaxe slammed in his viking helmet kill a marine hunting a gorge with his switchaxe
peanut butter jelly time! - marine on sandwich as onos, slam a marine into a wall (possibly using the charge equivalent skill)
evolution hurts - happy skulk (with a ripped off marine arm in his jaw) obviously, win your first game on the alien side
peace of me, pieces of you - unhappy skulk (rifle up his butt) obviously, win your first game on the marine side

TF2 is a bad example, because the achievements are used to unlock new weapons...if you want to play with the new toys you have to grind grind grind (I got all the medic stuff unlocked, then said to hell with it) <i>THIS</i> is something I don't want to see in NS...achievements by themselves are fine though - only the most crazy people will try to get them all if there's no extra incentive...
I know I'm a little late to the achievement game, but I just found an article about Achievements (specifically on XBL, but the comments are somewhat universal) on Slashdot: <a href="http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/07/20/0640244/Anatomy-of-an-Achievement" target="_blank">http://games.slashdot.org/story/10/07/20/0...-an-Achievement</a>
While I don't have any specific achievements to recommend, there was one particular quote from Slashdot that struck me as insightful:
"Personally, I hate the ones that force you to play the game in ways that are contrary to what the point of the game is. Put another way, I hate the ones that overlay an orthogonal metagame on top of a game. Your Geometry Wars example, while not a game I've played (though I have seen it enough to know what it's about), would be a prime example, since they're having you do something which has nothing to do with the game. On the other hand, when I played Mirror's Edge, I did go for (but failed to get, due to an "accident" involving an SMG on a certain stairwell and an enemy standing nearby) the Pacifist achievement, since I never had to stop working towards beating the game the whole time, but was able to add some additional complexity. In my opinion, the latter enhanced the game by layering on an additional challenge, while the former detracted from the game by layering on an additional metagame. I want my achievements to point towards the game and its completion, and not to be arbitrary "objectives" which serve no purpose."
Achievements within a single-player game are completely fine and some of them, if they are made well, can add another layer of difficulty as you said. However, in a multi-player game that's team vs team it's much harder to fine-tune and balance these ideas.
The trick is to strike a balance between the casual/normal/hardcore/completionist players. Achievements can help new players discover what they are supposed to be doing (an example might be to use the flamethrower to cut back the infestation, if that's possible in the final game, to help push back the aliens) while the normal and hard-core people can go for some harder ones (for example, killing 5 skulks in a 30 second period). It's when you get going into the silly achievements (Knife an Onos) or the "frenzy" achievements (Kill a developer, seriously. If this one got in, Flayra and the others wouldn't be able to step onto a server without be frenzied to death by people.) that you've stepped onto some unbalancing ground.
personally I think that achivements in NS2 are as usefull as concrete parachutes....... or as a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest.. you get the picture ;-)
many a person here has pointed out, that achivements would probably only encourage an anti-social playing style. I second that. Â My vote goes to leave it out.
Meh, dont really like achievements but i was bored so here we go:

This is Natural Selection 2. Aliens versus space marines. I need achievements for that as much as the characters of "Aliens" needed them. Which is not at all! It kills the immersion. It introduces an unnecessary meta game. I want to play Natural Selection, not Unlock the Achievement.
That alone wouldn't be all that bad. I will just turn them off the first time I load up the game and they won't bother me, right? Wrong. People will inevitably try to get them. This is a multiplayer game. This will affect everyone, whether they like achievements or not.

a lot of these are great, especially the no damage skulk kill one. but i think they would be better as bonus points to your score (part of the scoring system) rather than just achievements - since a lot of them could be achieved round after round.
nice thinking tex :)
Lighten up.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
You address none of my points, make some broad accusations and have nothing to back them up. Way to go. I don't even know what Counter-Strike references you're talking about.
<b>Achievement name</b>: Mr Keen
<b>Icon</b>: Maybe a marine looking like it's taking or following an order, or otherwise looking super keen :D
I like this pun, so let's work with it: As a lerk, get an assist while perching by using Primal Scream (don't know if that one's in or not...if not, maybe just for getting an assist)
<b>Natural Selection</b> Kill the marine who triggered your previous redemption.
Explanation: "Win a match under 20 minutes" Playing whit aliens/marines and of course, dedicated server.
Icon: "Skulk running faster whit a icon of speed in his back."
ninjaedit:
Something like this: <img src="http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/1433/horrible.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Yes, is horrible but makes more clearly the icon i mean.
Keep it up!
<b>"Jake Sully"</b> - Lerk Lift someone to a ledge
<b>"Under Siege"</b> - Kill Alien Hive with Siege cannons only
<b>"Ninja Warrior"</b> - Kill an Onos with Melee/Knife
<b>"All Blacks"</b> - Be on a team who all have Black Armour
<b>"Biohazard"</b> - Spit a marine to death as Gorge
I'm sure I'll think of a few more later.
