Alien Tower Idea: Upgrades and "Genetic Drift"

I apologies if this has already been discussed (I couldn't find it!) but here is an idea I had the other day.
The whole feel of the alien team is based around organic, biological and growth mechanisms. It would be neat if gorges had a "fertilize" ability that could cause the alien towers to grow larger, sprout more arms, and basically upgrade them. Adding a dynamic and continuous upgrade system instead of a quantized (level 1, 2, 3 etc) seems like it would be really interesting, allow for a unique outcomes and match the alien theme well. You could even allow for things like "genetic drift" which could be affected by events going on around the tower, or fertalizing gorge. For example if a tower takes a lot of damage, and then subsequently "fertilized" and healed it might grow larger and have increased HP. If it has a lot of distant interactions (like shooting at marines down a hallway), it might get increased firing rates if fertilized. If it has up close interactions maybe a more powerful mêlée attack will develop. You could balance out these increases of abilities by decreasing other abilities that are not beeing used as often. I think that would be really neat.
