<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Just got word from Valve that they are having some Steam problems, which most likely are causing the authentication errors people are seeing<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I get this error too, updated my server (dedicated) as well. Its running build #150.
On server start up I get an interesting error: <!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->Failed to load Steam ServiceServiceStart: started as Windows service CreateBoundSocket: ::bind returned Win32 error 10049 CreateBoundSocket: ::bind returned Win32 error 10049 cminterface.cpp (810) : Assertion Failed: 0 != m_hConnection CreateBoundSocket: ::bind returned Win32 error 10049 Timeout initializing Steam server services. even when the Steam servers were down, it doesn't seem like the authenticating process gave you enough time to actually "try". the authentication bit lasted no more than a second before it deemed it to be a failure.
My game seems to get stuck and "not respodning" on the Authentication menu, either getting stuck or "Authentication Failed" after 5-10 minutes... Has happened ever since then 26th :(
Gonna re-install and see if some fault there, if not and by looking at other posts, it seems to be some kind of x64 problem :( (Running Win7 x64 Ultimate)
I get Authentication failed for some servers but not for others. I.e. when I try to connect to the Heidis Zeigen Farm server, it failes with that error message.

ah great, is there a work around? could it be stickied if there is? :)

Well there is a real bug i don't know if its a server or client bug that causes this to happen but i only really see it when I'm testing stuff on a server on the same machine as the client. It seemed like something todo with timing out the client. I forget if it was restarting the server or the client that fixed.

Then why do I only get this on NS2 and with no other Steam game?

This same problem happens with Left4Dead1, Left4Dead2, and sometimes TF2.
As I said before, it's not a NS2 problem. Sometimes steam servers go funny.
I appreciate there are times when Steam has the odd blip and you get a "No steam logon" error message, that is true.
Although it goes deeper if the problem happens every time I play NS2, every time I start it up I struggle to get it authenticated. That signals their is more than just Steam to "go funny"?
As it just puts me off wanting to play the game when you have to start the game, quit it three or four times after being kicked out of authentication.
i sometimes get this error if i crash out of a game and then try to relog. i think there's some sort of timeout involved with your old ghost connection before it'll let you go back on.
Make sure Ns2.exe is not still running on your processes. Especially if it just crashed. Wait 5 mins and you should be able to Auth just fine as long as Steam servers are online. Otherwise if you crash out of NS2 sometimes steam servers wont allow you Auth for about 2-5 mins.

i can play cs and bf:bc2 online.
i have the friend online...
but i can't create a game by typing map ns2_tram
or by the create menu...
so this is not steam fault :)
good luck for the dev :)
is it worth waiting ?

Odd, I created a game by typing map ns2_tram.
Works perfect for me.
Looks like it might be fixed though, getting reports of working servers starting up.
Still, give it maybe an hour for everything to get sorted out.

Would you care to explain how karma affects NS2 authenticating?
