Mini-map on HUD

I'd like to see a mini-map available on the player HUD. It would be enabled by default, but could be disabled if desired. It would not have to show the entire level -- just the area around the player. This would help newbs know where they are, while allowing experienced players (or those who just don't like it) to remove it if desired.
As an additional possible feature, if the player is running/sprinting, the mini-map could zoom out a bit to show a bit more of the map. When the player is walking/stopped, it would zoom back in a bit more.
