I played the demo one and a half times, then seriously thought about what it would be like to play the full game. I decided the answer was "a huge timesink and not very fulfilling." Have not considered buying it since.
the great draw of civ is not the challenge but rather the whole epic scale god game thing; in this respect it does a very fine job, very few games are beneficial irl :P With balance changes and tweaks to the AI Im hoping for drastic improvements, the higher difficulty levels will start to hurt more if the computer doesnt suck so much ;p
The thing that has always annoyed me is that the computer doesn't so much get better at higher difficulty levels, it just starts cheating. Full awareness of the entire map at all times, knowledge of which cities have weak garrisons and are therefore vulnerable to surprise attack, free gold every round, accelerated research... all possible at higher difficulties. Big turn-off for me.

Although I don't buy it, because I see the exact same, outrageous pattern as with Civ4 regarding bugs, patches and content.
Because the money is usally worth the amount of time you spend on these kinda games, it seems they think they can afford to throw out a crappy game that's rather gonna be fixed and improved by community patches than by them.
Add to that all that bull###### hype about better AI and stuff. If you played/followed any civ4 mod at all, you know how difficult it is to get a proper AI and that a better AI is usally causing long turn times in the mid-/endgame.
Yeah there's the addictive one-more-turn and the grand epic of crushing you enemies, but at the same time I enjoy beating the system and coping strategies based on the map, who I'm near, what civilization I am, or just trying to see if I can Oracle Slingshot this game.
Civ5 still has an epic component, but the AI and the mechanics are speed bumps that you HAVE to overcome, and there's a clear way to overcome it. Kinda like Empire Total War. It's just work. It's not interesting to beat.
Really, the biggest problem I have with Civ 5 is basically that it isn't Alpha Centauri 2, with its much more limited but much more interesting characters, and sci-fi setting.

They are games that almost by design rarely actually run to conclusion. To some degree they simulate real life situations where some given task can't be completed in under an hour.
Thought I'd post that there's another patch coming out soon, focusing on AI and Diplomacy: <a href="http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthread.php?98034-Info-on-Next-Patch-%28Update-11-18%29" target="_blank">http://forums.2kgames.com/forums/showthrea...Update-11-18%29</a>
I'm tempted to break my Civ virginity with Civ5 but heard the AI is awful (surely the most important aspect in a game like this?!). If they can improve it in this patch I might take the plunge!

I was never able to finish a single game yet, cause it would always crash at a certain turn reliably.
