Just playing on a server with 18 people on it. Killed 3 marines in quick succession and took down some RTs etc. Game ran a little choppy at times but fine at others before I or the server crashed couldnt tell which one.
Still a long way to go but game is where it needs to be at for the 1st day of beta IMO. Frame rates were roughly around 20 - 30 on maxed settings. Getting up to 95 fps when staring at a blank wall.

I just played on Armory server #2 with ~15 other people, tons of sentrys, tons of whips, tons of hydra, and server was still playable. I was fun, it was awesome, a bunch of fades fighting marines with flamethrowers, whips whipping ###### ( Running whip upgrade doesn't work ). I don't know what game people are playing , but it seems we're not playing the same game.
Well, yes - the game feels better than the last builds, and it's starting to be fun. What I really like is that new features have been added. (Whip and research ftw! :3 )
I just want to confirm some issues (not whining around):
Connecting to a server and loading takes forever, showing connection problems for minutes. Build 155 introduces the sound-looping trouble for me again, I did not recognize it in 152 - 154. After one failed attempt to connect to a server, may it be because it is full or timed out, I have to restart the client - or all other attempts will fail too. The worst, and absolutely worst are hydras and sentrys, because they WILL make the whole match unplayable or crashing.
I haven't read any complaint about this so far, but: The hit-animation of MACs is awful. It looks almost retarded and it's confusing.
Adding some positive things: I really *love* the power nodes and can't wait for dynamic infestation to be introduced <3 Also the "squad blobs" are nice, and the little glowing thingys around an upgraded hive :)

The game feels so smooth now even on medium. You guys are really getting somewhere with the engine!, hell I can even turn on shadows again even on medium @ 1680x1050, still local hosting though. I'll test the net some other time
How do you show fps again... We seriously need an easy to find (stickied) console commands list or something... Windowmode is also smooth.

it is.
If you look up the top of the board in the Important topics area, thread is: Cheat codes for experimenting with stuff
lol to the "connection problem detected" Thanks to my high ping (200 agianst 93) I managed to kill 2 marines as Lerk. But then Connection problem detected. And the guy said: WTF (Tram HUB)
Anyway, I noticed a more smooth gameplay now, better fps even if I get so high pings (I'm from Argentina)
When I first join my computer can handle it to a playable state, but after a few people join (especially when it goes over 3v3) things have really slowed. Then you get connection problems... 4v4 pretty much crashes the server every time.
But when you do have a few people on, great stuff.
I discovered a new problem. Everytime I was alien commander, had control over 3/4 of the map, third hive and some crags and whips, I got a crash with bugreport. This problem exists on online games as well as on a self-hosted LAN game with a few bots.
As I am one of the new people pre-ordering and starting playing the beta... is there a forum thread for newbie questions around anywhere that I've missed?

Not really because most alpha testers are old NS players and the game hasn't changed much.
Just open a new thread with your questions and someone will help you for sure. In general people are quiet nice around here :)
Are you people actually complaining? The game runs 10x better than it did a week ago, and its not actually released yet, it may as well be in testing phase. Who cares if its unplayable? Just test it like your suppose to and make suggestions, not whine.

"... hasn't changed much"? xD
The both fractions have almost symmetric gameplay now. Crags and whips, drifters and MACs are new, have you noticed the power nodes? No more TF or PG... flamethrower... so .. it definately HAS changed :P

it's actually called feedback. I've only seen one post so far in this thread that could be classed as whine.

Have I written that it hasn't changed? I think these are changes someone would just expect from a sequel. But still, if you have played NS you have no problems jumping into NS2. Or did MACs, Power Nodes and Flamethowers confuse you so much that you didn't know how to play the game?
Of course you can also come up with a exact definition what "much" exactly is in terms of gameplay changes. Until then; nobody likes wisenheimers. Regardless of how many smileys they put behind their posts.
i was shocked of the FPS when i first joined RR in a 14ppl server - WTF IS THIS RLY NS2 ??? had fps going up to 90-100 but mostly around 50-60.
playing the game is different though, lower fps, but for the first time it's actually playable and enjoyable! i almost think the guys "forgot" to include the framerate improvements in the last patch... :P
though when alot of stuff are happening on the map and in the immediate area it can get unplayable for me..

All I wanted to mention was, that you underestimated the work that is being put into the "evolution" of the game. There's a lot of details changing, and the biggest part is the step away from the asymmetric gameplay through the introduction of the alien commander and the new research tree. Even the most experienced NS players have to look a few moments which alien structure researches what, and what is required to do that. The list of changes is long enough to call it "much". Even the units change a bit, most noticable will be the renewed gorge with its bellyslide and protective ability, but losing tons of responsibility. But yes, jumping right into NS2 is no problem, if you just run around and shoot anything that moves.

If the Beta doesn't work out, they'll just go to Gamma.
Then Delta.
Then Epsilon, and so forth.
Of course, if it's still not ready after 24 tries, then we should start to get worried.
Still a long way to go but game is where it needs to be at for the 1st day of beta IMO. Frame rates were roughly around 20 - 30 on maxed settings. Getting up to 95 fps when staring at a blank wall.
