Running NS2 client in Wine?

<div class="IPBDescription">linux question</div>Hi,

I don't have the beta or anything, but I saw some of NS2HD's youtube videos, looks pretty fun.
Problem is, I don't own a windows box, nor do I want to pay for windows...

I understand that, it might not be "constructive" towards the goal of the beta since the game probably is not being designed with an emulator such as WINE in mind...

but that being said, has anyone tried this, and does it work okay?

*crosses fingers*

The game is quite unoptimized at the moment, but it does show significant improvements from previous builds and alpha. But unoptimized it still the fact at hand. I guess with this emulation, it needs more power to run like console emulation?

I can't test it, but I guess it wont work. But someone else might come in here and will correct me if I'm mistaken :P

my understanding is that since [steam on linux] is not officially supported it's a pretty risky gambit. if ns2 doesn't work then you're out 35 bucks until probably sometime after release, since in all likelihood getting it to work under linux would be secondary to getting the game to release state.

Steam does seem to be supported by valve under linux.

For ubuntu they seem to just point to the generic wine instructions:

You can run Steam under wine and a lot of games too but not NS2. Probably when the game is near to final release this will change.
I tested it on Ubuntu 10.10 with Wine 1.3.7 and the game start but can't play it.

QFT - except with Wine 1.3.8. The game launches but stops loading at the main menu. On the other hand, the music you'll hear is great.

The UWE devs have stated that some time in the future (post-release) they hope to port to Linux and Mac, and they claim their underlying code can be swapped out from DirectX into OpenGL calls pretty easily.

    Until then... Windows.
