not what u think - please dont skip
I have been playing NS for about a week now, and its one of the most fun HL mods I have ever played. This is what makes it frustrating for me that I will probably give up playing this mod, because I don't think its worth playing at 500 ping, however much fun it has the potential to be.
I am getting lagged to hell in just about every game of NS I play. 500 is probably my average latency, sometimes it is 400, sometimes it goes as high as 700 for long periods (not just random lag spikes). I have read about he problems with the first release, but I'm pretty sure this is not my problem. For one thing, most servers should have upgraded by now, and my ping is not always over 1000 as was reported.
The game is not completely unplayable for me, but its not much fun either when you get killed by enemies you can't see half the time (or see in glimpses as they appear to flash in and out of existence). And shooting any moving targets becomes extremely hit and miss, let alone a fast moving skulk.
As I have said, I wish I could play this mod, but if nothing can be done about this lag I will have to go back to TFC/DM, where at least I can get a decent game with a ping of around 200-300. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is my system:
Athlon XP 1800
GF3 Ti200
256 Mb DDR RAM
56k modem
Thanx - swixblade

on page 2 I gave a lot of help... it applies for anyone on windows, not just peoiple with old PC's. Oh and that latency is fine with a 56k, I almost missed it
REALLY want to play this game!!!
I repeat, THIS IS NOT AN FPS PROBLEM!
Let's help this guy out as no one should have to play with that kind of ping...
Twilight
I'm still open to suggestions to improve it more tho,
thanx...
The way the game runs now is VERY CPU intensive for servers. That's one reason why your ping is high. I've had 3-500 ping before on servers because they just weren't fast enough to handle running NS, (even with only 12 playermax). Give the developers time and pings will go down more and more as they tighten the code. Even if you can't get broadband you should still be able to play decently with a 56k in the future.
It takes LESS bandwidth to run a 12-player NS server than a 10-player CS server!
It's probably your server's CPU.
Try Vadakill's NS; most broadband users get sub-100 pings there.

This way, you can determine with certainty that the problem is or is not you.
All you have to do to connect is type "connect vadakill.com" in the console. Of course, this server is quite popular, so you'll usually find yourself waiting to get in.
Fast CPU + tweaked out rig = low pings for all. Average for both teams is around 90-125ms.
