Yes, you are fine with this.
I don't see any problem. Lets wait for other opinions about it.

I would say your pushing your luck with that setup , the memory for one is a bit small and the CPU is a tad weak.
I would estimate the best you could get away with is Medium settings but I would GUESS you would end up on the awfull settings before long.

I would be very impressed if that setup ran NS 2 well to be honest, even when it is optimised for release.

... at the very minimal 2gig ram is too little for gaming on a Vista OS.

    Ha, no way.

I have a laptop running dual core, 2.2 Ghz, 4 gig of Ram and a Mobility Radeon 3475 (or something).

I have to run in 640x480... and whilst playable on lowest settings, the FPS is horrid. (Between 18 - 35, usually on the worst side of the equation)

However, I think it is still worth the purchase if you enjoy following develpment - and things will change once they start properly optimising the game, and it should run a lot better.

i have plans to purchase my own custom desktop but for now my alternative is my crappy lattop =)

thanks anyways and o well... no ns2 for now =)...

your mobility radeon will choke pretty hard. i'd be surprised if it got more than 10-15 fps in game right now.

I was hoping I could upgrade my graphics card in my laptop, but I don't think it is possible. Major bummer. It would run fine with a better graphics card I reckon. Well, good enough for me.

My 7 pc runs most games fine with 2gb ram.

I wouldn't set the textures to super duper high but most everything else works fine.

Definitely not going to get 60 Frames Per Second running any game released in the last year and definitely not any game released in the future. And that's a bare minimum for playability. Anything less than 60 FPS will definitely kill your ability to compete (unless you only play commander). I'd say you'll get 20 FPS in NS2 with that computer, which is less than unbearable.

I'd say hit up tomshardware.com and look at their System Builder Marathons they do every month. They try building the best possible PCs they can in three general price areas: $2000, $1000, and $700. Then they test the FPS in about 4 games at different resolutions and quality settings to give lots of information on just how well the money was spent.

When NS2 comes out in 2-3 months, the $1000 computer tomshardware puts together should be just right for getting 70-80 FPS in NS2 with 1280x1080 resolution. If you don't want to do lots of research, just following tomshardware and picking out the computer they have built and tested is very recommendable. You also know that all the parts are compatible. Of course look at the previous months' $1000 dollar computers also, because sometimes tomshardware strays from what they think is best and follows reader requests to test interesting computer part combinations. By interesting I mean bad. Of course, the FPS tests will show this and the writers will tell you this throughout the article ("We followed reader requests to buy $600 more for graphics cards instead of getting a non-###### CPU like we usually buy. We really shouldn't have done that, as the tests show. Putting the last month's computer up against this month's computer makes that really obvious."). Just FYI.

Definitely do not buy any computer parts until Intel's new CPU processors come out in january with their "Sandy Bridge" announcement (For that matter, your CPU should probably be an Intel CPU). The old (and very good) CPU's will have their prices cut, and new CPU's will of course perform better than the old CPU's at the prices the old CPU's are going at now. If you buy now so close to a new CPU release, you're definitely losing out. I'd wait until February 15th for all the price changes to the old CPU's and the information on just how good "Sandy Bridge" CPU's really are to come out so you can make an informed decision.

Edit: Oh, and never ever run Windows Vista for performance (or anything). Get Windows 7 if you ever get a new computer. I repeat, do not ever get Windows Vista.

Look , 2 gigs is too little for Win 7...if you are not going more than 2 gig then stick with XP, seriously ... Vista and Win7 are memory hogs, the same game in XP with 2 gigs will run considerably better than in Vista/ Win 7 BUT if you got some RAM to kick around Win 7 is as good as XP but with dx 10 and 11 support...not better , as good as.

Yar. Only reason to get Windows 7 is so you can run more than 3.3 gigabytes of RAM. If you only have 2 gigabytes, Windows XP should be the choice. The difference is that Windows XP can only handle about 3.3 gigabytes of RAM and Windows 7 can only handle 8 gigabytes of RAM.

But 2 gigabytes isn't enough for NS2, since it takes a $1000 computer to run it anyway and RAM only costs $50 per 2 gigabytes. Spending $1000 on everything and then saving $50 on RAM is silly. Just get $50 more RAM so you have 4 gigabytes total to be reasonably safe. I'd get 6 gigabytes to be sure that you have enough. But I'm paranoid, and 4 gigabytes should be just fine.

I think Windows XP should be okay with 4 gigabytes of RAM (even though it can't use all of that). I know for sure 2 gigabytes is retarded for Windows 7.

I didn't mention Windows Vista because that thing is terrible and never an option.

it doesn't take a $1000 computer. i built mine for 600 in august and it runs just fine.

Our definitions of fine probably differ severely.

Mine is: Runs 1280x1080 + high settings with average FPS >= 70 and minimum FPS >= 50.

What FPS do you get and at what resolution/quality setting?

You're right, I was too optimistic. Probably 6 months or a year. But if that's true, then a $1000 computer made when NS2 comes out might actually be overkill.
