Next is Minecraft getting best multiplayer, then art, then singleplayer. You know how it goes. :V
They still have to announce all the best art awards, etc, etc... I am pretty sure NS2 will get best upcoming. They are releasing an award every day until Christmas yeah?
RTS/FPS has been around for over a decade.
Can't really think of any widely successful block building games though.
There was once a game that had the russian korobeiniki/ korobushka as it's title song, just forgot it's name .... <_< >_>
btw: what the hell is minecraft? is it free? or do i really have to pay for this pixel pulp?
I'm still questioning Minecraft's innovativeness. Taking and placing blocks can't be the pinnacle of the entire indie scene, can it?

IF your are being serious, Minecraft is not free but worth the asking price ..especially if you buy before the 20th... its like the ultimate in craft your own base to survive, to make better stuffs , to keep the bad guys away... yeah its also pretty vague as well.
I spent too much time building up my little safehouse complete with garden and harbour for my leetle boat :P
If you ask me though the dev of Minecraft , notch is asking for trouble...all it will take to topple him is a HD / OpenGL version of Minecraft and his game is toast.

It is easily the first successful game to do it.
The principle is obviously just lego, but nobody has really been able to incorporate it well into video games.
The simplicity of the idea is not really a downside, portal after all is simply 'you have a teleporter gun'.
Just because it can be summed up easily doesn't mean it doesn't have depth. In fact generally being able to sum it up simply and it having depth is a good indictor of success.
Same thing could be said for Portal :P
@minecraft, it has as much depth as the player playing it (which varies widely :P)
And everyone has heard of dwarf fortress. Infiniminer was already around and Markus made a new version of it. That's it.
But NS2 is also not innovative.... considering NS1 came out in 2002 and last I checked the games have pretty similar concepts ^^.
The award isn't something to get too excited over, though it is interesting.
Kind of like saying no FPS has been original since Wolf3D.
"Awww man, look! You run around with a gun in a 1st person perspective! What a rip off... no originality!"

So because Doom did it better than Wolf3D later, its ok to ignore Wolfs achievements ? Shall we now say COD: Black ops is the epitome of orgininality as it does 3D FPS best.... according to sales, not me...I havent touch COD since 4 ( pre MW2 ).
Minecraft may not be the inventor of the genre, but it is a pioneer. And it is a pioneer because it took an innovative concept (<i>regardless of whether the developers themselves innovated</i>), did it <b>right</b> and found appropriately wide success: The core concept behind Minecraft is in fact innovative.
In the case of NS: consider Tremulous. Does that make NS any less innovative?
zombies is fun dude.

I'll see your Wolf3D and first will raise you <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catacomb_3-D" target="_blank">Catacomb Abyss</a> and then will squash your juvenile game with both <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maze_War" target="_blank">Mazewar</a> and probably it's older brother <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spasim" target="_blank">Spasim </a>
