well... this is gonna be hard.
The time that NS2 gets offically released... theres alot of competitors out there in the market of gaming, for one personally i have to mention crysis 2.
i must say when crysis 2 comes out everyone who is currently playing CoD and all the other very popular FPS games are sold.
Crysis 2 trailers made my jaw drop and i watched it thrice...
Who knows the constant releases of Call of duty XXXXXX number XX that will come in the future.
And also Valve are going to be working on their new stuff etc etc.
So why the hell did i made this topic? well heres the main thing:
Do you think Ns2 has alot of competitors when it comes out and are it's success chances high? (i freaking love ns2 and its amazing respectively)?

CoD does intend to release a new edition every year, I think. Pretty much re-skinning it and busting it out. Clever business, pretty much selling the game on its name and reputation. But the games themselves aren't ever going to be much to speak of, just the same thing rehashed. "Tried and true" says the optimist.
Valve have both the style and the substance down, and they cater to a large audience, not just the $3k+ computer users. But what multiplayer FPSs do they have in the making? The only multiplayer game that I know of that they have in the making is DotA2, but the FPS/DotA markets don't really overlap much - and where they do, you're going to have people who will play both the FPS and the DotA-style games not just choose one or the other.
Diablo 3 may be a competitor, simply due to its sheer popularity and the fact that it's from Blizzard, even though the genres don't overlap at all.
cod:mw 1 & 2 were amazing experiences as a whole, sure the gameplay is simplified (dumbed down) for console kiddies,
but the "whole picture" was just very enjoyable for me.
same with the new MoH.
i play to have a story told to me and experiencing it.
(haven't played cod:bo yet cos of stuttering issues, they fixed yet?)
FarCry was amazing, especially storywise.
Same with Crysis and Warhead, not to mention the amazing visual experience. no, not only "the effects" but also the "scenes".
I have no dubt that i will enjoy Crysis 2 immensely...
STALKER is my FAV sp game ever (while ns my fav mp)
BF:BC2 was also really good, different take with all the lighthearted humor, but still very fun.
But the difference here is that all those are mainly single-player experiences,
after each and one of those i still came back to NS1 on the HL1 engine, enjoying it as much as ever!
Exactly. There aren't many competitors for NS2 because, excepting the inevitable CoD sequel, there aren't many big title / well-known multiplayer games forthcoming, for the same market.
But NS2 is (will be) a far superior on-line experience, and really is a completely different kettle of fish.
Im not downplaying NS2, after all, this is the fist and only game i have ever pre-ordered (the SE version) just to get into the Beta for...im just saying people should be a little bit more realistic in what they try and compare this game to...
Either way...its a compliment to NS2 to have an independent game like this be compared to other more established mainstream franchise games like COD etc etc....
NS2 > Crysis 2 in my books!
Overall, yes, less people might be playing NS2 than otherwise, but that's the same really no matter when you release. The kick is what will last...and that's solid multiplayer fun. You can have the best singleplayer game in history, but it won't last as long as a decent multiplayer game. Multiplayer = Replayability.
Now, NS2 is going to be much more than a decent multiplayer game, so I believe the end result will have NS2 in a good position.
You also have to consider sales, though. NS2 will need to keep some interesting tricks up their sleeves to keep more purchases in the future alive.
imagine the possibilities *starting to dream and going to bed*
NS2 is all about team play. Even, if you're lucky, a guy going solo to the other side of the map could be helpful and give you the opportunity to not lose. But you'll see almost all the players will follow orders and work together.
So far the best experience I have on a multiplayer game is with NS, and NS2 will surpass this.
"to me"
There's no big release requiring physical skill (reflexes, accuracy, spatial awareness).
Crysis 2 is a joke. No, it literally is a joke, just like Crysis 1 was. "All style, no substance" is very accurate. But it will probably sell well. However, it's not competition. NS2 is just as pretty. Crysis will throw pixels at us like a Neanderthal. NS2 will have perhaps unrivaled lighting (which is important considering we play games via light-based interfaces to our eyes called "screens"). Remember, when developers took good screen shots from the NS2 Alpha, some people had no idea it wasn't concept art. Now when community member Peregrinus takes a good screen shots of the Beta, they look like frames from pre-rendered cinematic trailers. NS2 steals Crysis' gimmick and works (or will work) on affordable computers.
Call of Duty requires no skill. Black Ops has a mission that plays itself on the second hardest difficulty. The multiplayer is similarly uninspiring. Call of Duty: Next Edition will sell well and may break records, but people who want games which reward skill will be left hungry. NS2 isn't a stupid shooter, so we're still okay.
And Valve has announced no FPS like NS2, meaning Valve will have no answer to NS2 for 2 years. Maybe a year and a half.
I'm not worried.
NS2 was always going to be niche and not be record-breakingly popular. Which is okay. The high skill segment is big enough to fund NS2... and there's nothing like it for the market. You really have to consider it's FPS-RTS nature. It draws people who are in either crowd or both and highly skilled.
Charlie said it best: "It's like Counterstrike and Starcraft". Combine the two player counts of those games and you've got 10 million (maybe more?). NS2 will be fine.
And with the new movement controllers, or worst the kinetic one, all FPS game will need to play themselves or the person playing it will never finish a mission on easy mode.
So, the AAA developers focusing on console are making PC games compatible with the same game in console which sucks. They make this to make a single game with the same experience between PC and console, but the sad true is that they are making the worst games ever, good looking but a waste of time to play. Instead of downgrading the PC games to a console game they should force the console companies to become better and give the same experience as in a PC game.
Games like Crysis have a good side, the history behind the game itself. You get immerse into the game just for the history, like Assassin's Creed, but the gameplay when downgraded to console is ugly.
Some games jumped from the PC to console. When you are used to play the game on PC and then try the console one, well, disappointed.
Right now NS2 have only 1 competitor, sad non skilled players that want a self played console game. And because I have talked too much nonsense I stop here.
Now, the things VALVe has cooking are awsome! Portal 2, DOTA 2....(Not even gonna mention that CoD garbage)
ON TOPIC: The popularity of NS2 will depend on the reviews and future promotion...maybe they should ask VALVe a favor for that. (We'll see about the indie-awards....)
I don't really care about NS2 competition. The game works for me, and that's enough.
No, don't even think about it! Get your filthy mind out of here right now...
