PLEASE let us rebind flashlight

<div class="IPBDescription">ESDF players get it weird</div>I normally play games with ESDF layout instead of WASD. I won't listen to flames telling me to play otherwise.

As NS2's flashlight is now, whenever I strafe right, my flashlight (which is forced to F) goes nuts and literally becomes a strobelight. It's incredibly distracting and taking away from anything I could be getting out of marine play. Trying to strafe away from a skulk is just a bad experience.

Please let us rebind Flashlight.

I think you can rebind it by modifying the option.xml using notepad in your

    C:\Documents and Settings\>your windows login<\Application Data\Natural Selection 2

Look for <ToggleFlashlight>F</ToggleFlashlight> and change your key to something you want...

Thank you, that looks like it got fixed. However, this should really be added to the main menu. A player with this problem who has no knowledge of config files or where to find them shouldn't have to hunt everywhere to fix one keybind. :P

"Look in the general direction of the UWE forum servers, this is the last time you make me double post dammit!"

I know someone who plays with TAB+QWE (TAB is left, Q is forward, W is backwards and E is right), go figure...

Full button rebinding will hopefully be implemented eventually.

    Until then, config hax.

Two extra buttons. With WASD I would have my pinky on the greater than/less than key, which some games will not let you rebind; where as with ESDF my pinky is on Z.

greater than/less than key? what kind of keyboard are you using? that's on the other side of the keyboard: shift+comma, shift+period.
I ask about ESDF because I can see that it'd allow you to have your pinky on the A and Z keys, which may be less strenous or more comfortable than Shift and Ctrl. Actually the Z is a bit weird.

but... physically is it that much of a deal? if you were using WSAD or EDSF its practically the same...

im a bit confused of the purpose of not using WSAD and using another set of keys...

    i gotta say

    What's it to you?

Physically, the real difference is in the use of the pinky finger.

Question: Why do you play ESDF?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    1) Gives me an extra row of keys on my left side. "A" is my use key, "Q" is my last weapon used in most games, "W" being flashlight, "Z" being prone. I can still reach Shift and CTRL just fine.
    2) ESDF is actually where you put your hand when you type. Index finger on F, which (at least for my hand) naturally puts middle finger on E and ring finger on S. In short, it's perfectly natural to have my hand there, and I don't have to move it when I type into chat.
    3) habit

Not to say I don't play WASD on some games, especially when controls get so complex and are so counter-intuitive to redefine (ever try changing Battlefield control scheme? You have to do it four times - 3 different vehicle types - and have to confirm every single key change 3 times because it conflicts with all 4 movement types)
  • HarimauHarimau Join Date: 2007-12-24 Member: 63250Members
That sounds reasonable. Feels more strenuous to reach the shift and control keys though.
  • esojesoj Join Date: 2010-11-18 Member: 74997Members
ESDF was the default layout in tribes 2 and that is where I got it from and have continued on using ESDF ever since. it's not that hard to reach the shift and control keys from ESDF once you get used to it. I also will in games where I toogle them a lot rebind those keys to buttons on the side of my mouse since they are normally crouch and sprint or crouch and something else.

Swedish layout. It's right next to left-shift.

The square brackets and curly brackets were moved to alt+7. alt+8, alt+9 and alt+0 to make room for å, ä and ö. This can get really annoying when working with C-type languages.

If you want awkward keyboard layouts... my mother uses AWER, which are (in order) back, strafe left, forward and strafe right; Q for ducking/sneaking, T for sprinting, Y and U for lean left/right.
